以我讀中文書的習慣，我其實不會覺得前後兩個例句不順說。
英文翻中文不是非把倒裝弄回來

ex:
我很有錢, 雖然我很醜
雖然我很醜, 我很有錢

這兩句因為強調點不一樣，用意也會不一樣
語句放前放後是有關係的，否則原作者一開始就直述就好。


不過如果是這句，我比較會覺得問題在於意思不到位
接前後文可以看出作者要表達這城市的古老造成的矛盾
"既宗教又反宗教"
但中文裏這意思淡了不少

: 「雖然最後的議員已死去幾百年，古老的城門依然靜椅，保護議會的廳堂，而身披法袍

Here, ancient gates still hung at rest,
prepared to protect the halls of the Common Council
though the last councilmen were all generations dead.
There, a noble bronze statue showed the wise and solemn countenance
of a robed and mitred bishop streaked with verdigris and pigeon shit.

The streets had signs in wood and stone from a thousand years of history,
so that a single alley might be called by a dozen names.
Iron gates marked the twenty, tiny political districts,
allowing the Prince to remake the pathways through the city at his whim,
protection against riots and conspiracy
