Reetz was an athletic, solid all-around catcher whom the Nationals signed for
$800,000. He showed a mature hitting approach in the GCL, with a knack for
working the count and not expanding the strike zone. He’s a coordinated hitter
with a quick, direct swing that helps him make consistent contact. He’s strong
, especially through his forearms, with loft in his swing that could lead to
average power, though right now he’s more of a gap-to-gap hitter.

2. Reynaldo Lopez, rhp, Auburn (Nationals)

Age: 20. B-T: R-R. Ht: 6-0. Wt: 185. Signed: Dominican Republic, 2012.

Lopez signed for just $17,000 out of the Dominican Republic, then missed most
of 2013 with a sore arm that was eventually diagnosed as bone weakness. He
exploded onto the prospect scene in the NYPL, allowing two or fewer runs in
each of his seven starts, then continuing to dominate after a promotion to low
Class A.

better and gave him more hard bore with his fastball. His curveball took a step
forward, showing 11-5 shape and better depth than it had in the past.

chance to stick as a starter and become a top-of-the-rotation arm down the road

Read took a major step forward as a 20-year-old in the NYPL, putting together
the best offensive and defensive season of his career to date.

“For me, he was one of the most impressive guys all-around,” Williamsport
manager Shawn Williams said. “He’s a good fastball hitter, a tough out,

behind Molina for you guys?

His teammate Reynaldo Lopez may have ended the year with more dominating
statistics, but Giolito was everything scouts and managers expected to see from
a righthander with prototype frontline starter tools and an ideal frame.

Giolito could dominate hitters with his top-of-the-scale 92-100 mph fastball

Few pop-up prospects popped up as powerfully as the power-armed Lopez, who
entered the season with 15 pro innings under his belt and concluded the year in
the Hagerstown playoff rotation.

Waylaid by bone weakness in 2013, Lopez struggled in two June starts at

, it’s going to be effective,” a pro scout said.

Coming into this year, Difo had been viewed as more of an org player than a
premium prospect. He was a fill-in for four different Nationals clubs in 2013
but responded to a chance to be an everyday player in Hagerstown by winning the
league’s MVP award after ranking among league leaders in batting average (.315
), stolen bases (49) and extra-base hits (52). He also was one of the toughest
players in the league to strike out.

Scouts who saw Difo this year wonder where he’d been hiding before, for he was
an above-average defender at second base and an average defender at shortstop.
His plus speed played up because he showed excellent baserunning skills.

Mike (VA): Do you think Giolito's rapid progression influences who the Nats
let walk these next couple of years?

J.J. Cooper: Not trying to be contrary, but he hasn’t progressed all that
rapidly. He’s still only pitched in low Class A two seasons after he was

under the gun to re-up everyone from their extremely talented big league
rotation. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see Giolito’s climb through the

Tommy John surgery.

pitcher. Scouts, who will say they are not sure this is the cause, think he may
have just thrown too many events in high school. He was very famous as scouts
like to say, but maybe he should have shut it down for longer during the
offseason. Again, with TJs, what we know is we don’t know much.

No one doubts that Severino has the present defensive chops to play in the
major leagues. The question is his bat, but he made strides in that area again
this season. He impressed scouts and his manager with his ability to hit with
enhanced power, even to right-center field.

1. Michael Taylor, of, Harrisburg (Nationals)

Age: 23. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 210. Drafted: HS—Fort Lauderdale, 2009 (6).

After a smashing winter-league performance in Puerto Rico in the offseason,
Taylor broke out in a big way in the EL before a brief stay at Triple-A
Syracuse leading to his big league debut in August. He ranked top-five in the
league in batting (.313), home runs (22), stolen bases (34), on-base percentage
(.396) and slugging (.539).

經過活躍的波多黎各冬季聯盟表現後，
Taylor於八月短期待在3A Syracuse甚至大聯盟debut前先在EL大爆發。

Added muscle and a refined approach at the plate helped Taylor unlock his power
at the plate, which showed up loudly in his production at Harrisburg. He
possesses supreme bat speed and is extremely strong through his core and his
lower half. He can hit the ball out to any part of the park, though the extra
thump came with a corresponding spike in his strikeout rate.

A tall, wiry righthander who was drafted by the Nationals, then traded to the
Athletics, then traded back to Washingon, Cole showed signs this season of
being worth the re-investment. He spent the first half at Harrisburg before
moving to Triple-A Syracuse in the second half and putting up similar numbers.

1 and 2 for me, it’s 1 and 1a. The difference for me is Taylor has the
potential for more power, is a true center fielder with game-changing range in
the outfield and has a well above-average arm. They’re both fantastic
ballplayers who project to be absolute studs.

surprised to see Betts #2 because I think Taylor's swing and miss propensity
means Betts will have the better hit tool at the upper level and they're both

anti-Taylor...so your arguments don't make any sense to put Taylor ahead of
Betts (and Lindor!)...you guys just aren't getting it or seeing it!

5. Steven Souza, of, Syracuse (Nationals)

Age: 25. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 225. Drafted: HS—Everett, Wash., 2007 (3).

A late-bloomer with upside, Souza logged eight years in the minors before
finally making it to the majors in 2014. He led the IL in the modern
triple-crown categories (batting/on-base/slugging) to help Syracuse finish with
the best record in the IL.

Souza combines good speed with raw power, and his easy righthanded swing allows

average speed can be described as “deceptive,” as one scout put it.

Age: 22. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-5. Wt.: 200. Drafted: HS—Oviedo, Fla, 2010 (4).

An improved breaking ball was the difference-maker for Cole in his second year
back with the organization that signed him for $2 million in the fourth round
of the 2010 draft. The Nationals traded Cole to the Athletics for Gio Gonzalez
in December 2011, then reacquired him two years later in a three-team deal
involving Michael Morse.

Cole tightened his slider in 2014, throwing it with more power and conviction,
and some scouts project the low-80s pitch to average. He fills the strike zone
with 93-95 mph fastballs with plus life, though his command needs tightening
after allowing nine home runs in 11 starts. He throws an excellent sinking
changeup and profiles as at least a mid-rotation starter.

clicked this year? And can he maintain it?

Vincent Lara-Cinisomo: It’s largely a new middle-field approach that turned
things around for Souza. He still has the power. I’m not sure he’ll maintain
.350, but he’s useful player because of his ability to play center field and
the corners and he has a strong throwing arm to boot.

not sure that’s in 2015. He’s a great fourth outfielder, especially
considering Bryce Harper’s injury history, in that he can play center field
and has power. It remains to be seen what the Nats do, but I don’t see him
getting regular time in D.C. in 2015.
