CHILE Bravo - 6.5 - Could have set up a lawn chair in front of goal. Until the closing minutes, it seemed that Switzerland were never going to score. Earns a 6.5, but is not far from a "N/A" rating. Isla - 6 - May have played the Swiss' best through ball of the game when he made a lazy back pass to Bravo, but was not punished. Played rather freely between the flank and centre, which made him difficult to mark, and also completed nearly double the passes of any Swiss player. Medel - 6.5 - Solid at the back, but put under nearly no pressure whatsoever, especially after Behrami's red card. Like Bravo, it really is difficult to rate him. Ponce - 6.5 - Like Medel, Ponce was hardly ever pressured, but managed to contain the Swiss attacks that came his way. He distributed the ball with expert precision, even over long distances. Jara - 6 - Played in central defence at times, and also on the left flank. No player completed more passes than the West Brom man, who pushed the ball forward for Beausejour to begin the Chilean attack. Vidal - 6 - Tested Benaglio with a wicked shot early on, but did not do enough to impress Marcelo Bielsa, and was substituted at the half. Carmona - 7 - Had an excellent shot saved early in the match, but also picked up a silly and costly booking that will see him miss Chile's next match. The midfield anchor was arguably his team's best passer, and sprayed the ball all over the pitch. His distribution will be sorely missed against Spain. Fernandez - 6.5 - Had a free role during his 65 minutes on the pitch, and showed up in nearly all areas of the pitch. His movement confused the Swiss, but did little to create goals. Was eventually sacrificed for Paredes, who played a much more direct role in the Chilean attack. Sanchez - 8 - As in the Honduras match, the Udinese man was his team's primary threat in attack. Time and time again, his precise touch forced the Swiss defenders to make timely interventions. While his finishing was occasionally suspect, Sanchez was a real catalyst for the Chilean attack. Suazo - 3.5 - A very disappointing performance from the 29-year old striker in his first match of the tournament. Suazo picked up a booking within the first 75 seconds, and proceeded to waste every opportunity that fell to his feet. Beausejour - 7 - His pace alone posed problems for Lichtsteiner, but after a bright start, the Club America man went missing in the second half. Had his timing been better in the first half, he may have scored or assisted a goal or two, but was repeatedly ruled offside. Substitutes Gonzalez - 7.5 - Scored the match-winning goal, which, in itself, deserves plenty of credit. Gonzalez spent most of his time out wide, but in a rare move to the inside, found himself wide open to net the winner. Valdivia - 5 - Played an exquisite through ball to create the opener, and was an inspired swap in place of Suazo. Excellent playmaking from the number 10 won the game for Chile. Paredes - 7.5 - Came on for Fernandez and should have scored at least once, but failed to make the difference. His pressure was important, however, in keeping the Swiss worried at the back as they sought a necessary equaliser. SWITZERLAND Benaglio – 8 - Switzerland's best player on the day, the Wolfsburg goalkeeper made several key saves in the first half to deny the Vidal, Carmona, and Sanchez, but ultimately was unable to keep a clean sheet. Lichtsteiner – 5 - Less impressive than against Spain, but certainly not the weakest part of the Swiss defence. The Lazio right-back was beaten once or twice, but otherwise defended well. He really loses points for his errant passing, which needed to be better if Switzerland were to take a point. Von Bergen – 6 - The more consistent of the Swiss central defenders, the Hertha Berlin man played a very clean shift, and coolly dealt with the Chilean strikers. Like his defensive colleagues, he was caught out near the end of the game, but that was due to Ottmar Hitzfeld's change in tactics. Grichting – 5 - The centre half followed up his excellent performance against Spain with a similarly impressive showing against Chile, but for one howler. Grichting made a number of well-timed challenges to deny the likes of Sanchez, but also conceded possession to the Chilean attacker, who should have scored. Ziegler – 3 - Flop of the match. Had all sorts of trouble dealing with the Chilean attack on his flank, was left for dead on a couple of occasions, and provided precious little in support of Fernandes. Behrami – 3 - Somewhat unlucky to be sent off for trying to free himself from Vidal's shirt-pulling, but make no mistake: he was completely anonymous before earning his marching orders. Inler – 5.5 - Ran and ran and ran, but perhaps could have followed his passes with more commitment. The 25-year old central midfielder was a bit loose with his tackling and distribution. Huggel – 6 - The most industrious man on the pitch in terms of running, the Basel midfielder was a perfect fit for Ottmar Hitzfeld's tactical setup. He never tried to do anything spectacular, but Huggel was precise and calculated, completing 21 of his 22 pass attempts. Fernandes – 3.5 - The hero against Spain, Fernandes was utterly anonymous in today's match. The Saint-Etienne man barely touched the ball, and completely failed to play his role in the Swiss attack, which is to provide the strikers with service. Frei – 4.5 - Starved of service up front, and played out of position on the right wing after Behrami's sending off. Eventually was replaced as Hitzfeld looked to use the more positionally appropriate Barnetta. Nkufo – 4.5 - May have been a threat if Switzerland had earned a few more set pieces, but was stymied in open play. The veteran attacker was isolated up front, and forced to take on several defenders alone, which is definitely not his strong point. Substitutes Barnetta – 5 - Replaced Frei before the break, and filled in as Switzerland's right winger. Carded almost immediately, but played a very industrious 45 minutes, and appeared more at home in his position than was Frei. Derdiyok – 4 - Had a glorious chance to equalise in the closing moments, but missed wide of the left post. His movement was better than that of his predecessors, but he barely touched the ball after his substitution. Bunjaku – 5 – Came on for the final 13 minutes, and did about as much as Fernandes before him, which certainly was not enough. Earns a higher rating because of limited playing time, however.
