CANO, WANG NOT OFFERED LONG DEALS By GEORGE KING March 4, 2007 -- TAMPA - Despite Chien-Ming Wang winning 19 games a year ago and developing into the staff ace and Robinson Cano being an All-Star and finishing third in the AL batting race, the Yankees aren't offering them multi-year deals. The Yankees have sent the agents for Wang and Cano one-year contracts. Wang's is for slightly more than $500,000 and Cano's is just shy of the $500,000 mark. The players have until March 11 to sign them or their contracts will be renewed at a lower price. "I don't know yet,'' Wang said when asked if he would sign it. Cano said the contract was sent to his agent, Bobby Barrett, and that he will sign it. Asked if he was OK with not getting a multi-year offer for bigger dollars, Cano said, "It's all right, my day will come." That day will be in the early part of 2008 when Cano and Wang are eligible for arbitration and will have their salaries swell considerably. Wang, who will turn 27 on March 31, made $353,175 last year when he went 19-6 with a 3.63 ERA. The 19 wins tied Wang for the league lead with Cy Young-winner Johan Santana. Cano, 24, batted .342 and finished behind Joe Mauer (.347) and Derek Jeter (.343). * The Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth and posted a 4-3 win over the Pirates at Legends Field. Yankees are 3-0. * GM Brian Cashman missed yesterday's game to be with his daughter Grace for her first communion in Darien, Conn. * Since the Phillies called the Yankees and asked if they could use the DH today in Clearwater, Fla., Jason Giambi will make the trip. Originally, Giambi wasn't going on the trip if the DH wasn't going to be used in the NL park. "They are the ones who mentioned it to us and it's good for us," Joe Torre said. While Giambi started the first two games at DH and didn't play yesterday, he still works as if he will play first base at some point. "I have been taking ground balls and throwing every day," Giambi said. * According to Yogi Berra, Yankees right-hander Humberto Sanchez resembles possibly the most recognizable athlete of all time. "He looks like Cassius Clay," Berra said of the South Bronx High School product who is sidelined with tightness in the right forearm. * The Yankees sent out six players yesterday. One was pitcher Steve White, who was slowed early in camp by a neck problem. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.84.29.27
