Defending champion Russia welcome the return of Marat Safin to the Davis Cup
lineup after the 23-year-old from Moscow was forced to miss the first round
victory over the Czech Republic with a left wrist injury. Nikolay Davydenko,
who broke his wrist during the Kroger St. Jude in Memphis, returned to action
in Miami, losing in the first round to Luis Horna. Davydenko was the hero in
Ostrava, defeating Radek Stepanek in the crucial fifth rubber to clinch
Russia’s berth in the quarterfinals.
Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev also names Yevgeny Kafelnikov and 2002 final
hero Mikhail Youzhny. Argentina, who lost 3-2 to Russia in last year’s
semifinal in Moscow, recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over Germany in the first
round. The only change to Gustavo Luza’s lineup from that win is Mariano
Zabaleta, who replaces Juan Ignacio Chela. David Nalbandian, Gaston Gaudio and
Lucas Arnold make up the Argentine team.
