The 2004 Wimbledon champion and world No.2 will look to make a breakthrough
this year at the US Open Series, her best prior summer hardcourt result being a
quarterfinal finish at San Diego last year. The 18-year-old Russian has an
incredible 41-7 season record coming in, highlighted by title runs at Tokyo
[Pan Pacific Open], Doha and Birmingham, a runner-up finish at Miami, and semi-
final appearances at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Rome and Wimbledon. In
10 events played, she has lost prior to the semifinals just twice, at Berlin
and Roland Garros, losing to Henin-Hardenne both times.
