Although dead cells can play important roles, the growth of a
multicellular organism depends on cell division. As you know,
all muticellular organism, regardless of size, start as a single cell.
A relatively small number of consecutive cell division can eventually change
a single cell into an organism with many billions of cells.
For example, if a cell and its descendent continue through 50 consecutive
divisions, more than trillion cells result.As you can see in the Biotechnology
box on page 42, cell divisions can have important implications for plant
biotechnology. In this section, we will look at how cell division is involved
in the growth and reproduction of a eukaryotic organsim.
