我就曼大的狀況來說明一下。

在SAHC(School of Arts, Histories, and Cultures)之下的EAS(English and American
Studies) offer的programme有下列幾種：

American Studies MA
Contemporary Literature and Culture MA
Creative Writing MA
English and American Studies MA
Gender, Sexuality and Culture MA
Literature and Culture 1200-1700 MA
Post-1900 Literatures, Theories and Cultures MA
Postcolonial Literatures and Cultures MA

其中MA in EAS就是台灣所謂的「外文所/英文所 文學組」
其他的幾個programme就是根據不同時期而特別列出有別於MA in EAS的課程。

差別在於mandatory course跟optional courses的不同。我舉MA in EAS跟 MA in PLC
來做比較。

在網路上的課程簡介你可以發現，MA in EAS的 module包含有：
Early Modern Masculinities; Ugliness, Disability and Selfhood, 1560-1770;
The Eighteenth-Century Novel; Byron and Byronism from Ireland to Russia;
Reading Dickens; The Future of Modernism; Postcolonial Cultures: Gender,
Identity and Community; Modernist Children; Post-Gay Culture;
The American Body; The Stranger in Modern Society,
and Contemporary Scottish and Irish Fiction.

這些課程從中古時期一直到當代，從英國文學到美國甚至是蘇格蘭以及愛爾蘭文學都有。
同時，也包含不同理論(同志理論、後殖民以及現代主義等)

至於MA in PLC (postcolonial literatures and cultures)所offer的module則有；
Postcolonial Cultures: Gender, Identity and Community;
England, Identity and Writing: The Empire and After, 1918-1990;
Colonial Discouse and Postcolonial Theory;
The Irish and Scottish Migrant Imagination;
Art and Ethnography; Gender and Postcolonial Theory;
Colonial Modernity and the Public Sphere;
South Asian and/or Middle Eastern Art and Architecture;
British Colonialism and its Legacy in Burma; Is America Postcolonial.

很明顯的，這些課程都是偏重於「後殖民」議題。理論的課程也多跟後殖民論述有關。

從這樣的比較可以知道的是，如果你在申請的時候已經很明白地知道自己喜歡後殖民，
那就可以直接申請MA in PLC。這樣你所受到的訓練會更加以「後殖民」為中心。如果
自己的喜好沒有那麼強烈，或者說自己對各時期文類都想嘗試看看的話，那MA in EAS
應該就會是比較好的選擇。

我是不確定是不是當你選擇MA in PLC就不可以選修MA in EAS的課程。畢竟從列舉中
的選單看來有些課程是的確有重複。但我個人相信的是，如果你今天選擇了MA in PLC
一定會有相關的credit規定。也就是說，會規定你必須要修滿多少「相關」的學分才
可以畢業。在這樣的規定之下，如果你選修了「非相關」課程的課，應該就是沒有用
的。其實，如果不是對某特定時期文類有很強烈的偏好，我倒覺得申請MA in EAS是最
保險的方式。主因在於選擇性多、彈性大。但這只是我很個人的意見。畢竟很明白知道
自己偏好哪種時期文類的人也不在少數。
