Argentina captain Roberto Fabian Ayala has defended international team-mates
Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, insisting that it is only a matter of
time before they show their true form for West Ham.

Amid fears over their ability to settle in England, Argentina coach Alfio
Basile has claimed that Tevez and Mascherano "seem lacking in enthusiasm". "I
am", he admitted, "worried about them. I see them and think they must be
looking at everything and understanding nothing."

But Ayala believes that the pair are merely going through the inevitable
transition after making the leap from South America to Europe and has backed
them to come good. The 33-year-old Valencia defender, who has played in
Europe since 1995, said: "It's always difficult in the beginning for us. When
you first come to play here you have to change your game and adapt to the
lifestyle. The leagues are very competitive and they will have to get used to
it but they won't have a problem in the long-term: they are tough characters.
I know both of them well. I have spoken to them and I am absolutely convinced
they have the right personality and all the qualities to succeed."

Harry Redknapp manager of Portsmouth, West Ham's opponents today, has added
his support and told West Ham manager Alan Pardew to stick with them. The
ex-Upton Park chief has hailed the pair as two of the best up and coming
players in the world, saying: "It takes time to settle in and when they do
they will be great players I am sure. I would have been delighted if somebody
had given them to me."
