I spent the early hours of Thursday chewing the fat with Argentina's players
after they beat France. Here's what they had to say ...

In the wee small hours, a hotel lobby in the outskirts of Paris. Reluctant
waiters are bringing bottled beers and Coca-Colas even though the bar is
closed. El Pato Abbondanzieri, El Raton Ayala and El Gringo Heinze sit with a
group of civilians - a handful of agents, lawyers and journalists. A couple
of hours earlier, Argentina beat France 1-0 and now everyone is tired and
winding down. The hacks have filed their pieces, the agents have closed their
deals, the players have played full time. Now, it is just banter.

凌晨在巴黎郊區的一座旅館大廳裡，儘管酒吧還沒開店，不太情願的服務生還是拿出了一

like a straight answer. Unbeknown to him, he has been awarded a generous
seven, but the journalist interprets Heinze's questioning as a personal rant
against the practice of journalism generally and a dig at Argentinian
journalists in particular.

Who was MOTM? How do you answer such a question? If football is about the
emotions it arises, then Claude Makelele always gives me pleasure, I say.
Laughs all round. Particularly at the use of the word pleasure. I look at the
three players in front of me. They, together with Javier Zanetti, formed the
backbone of Argentina's firm defence. In terms of peace of mind, they
provided it non-stop for 94-odd minutes. Time after time they frustrated
Patrick Vieira's efforts to penetrate, and closed in on France's expectations
of an equaliser.

Or perhaps it was just Roberto Ayala. The 33-year-old captain celebrated his
107th cap Wednesday, surpassing his own record. At his age, recognition that
he remains valuable came with a new deal, a three-year contract with
Villarreal, which will see him move this coming July and which his agent
labelled "the best of his career". Ayala had a good game. And so did Zanetti,
who has now accumulated 104 caps. Although some hacks dissed his efforts,
there were more than a few instances where his presence made me breathe easy.

Fernando Gago represented hope. After a first-half in which he struggled to
get used to his new team-mates, he found his rhythm in the second and was the
only Argentinian squad member to provoke oohs and aahs from the predominantly
French crowd. Unborn the last time Argentina faced France in 1986, Gago
slipped into his international debut gently, showing promise at the very
least. But Pato, who sees the game from a uniquely lonely angle, said he
found Lucho Gonzales more reassuring. Pato, perhaps the only one in that
squad to have experience of playing alongside Gago at club level, mentioned
how unnerving Gago's tendency to slip forward as a No10 is - for him. As
goalie.

been put on, more than once. Interesting that the goalie found that
reasssuring. Lucho has been awarded only five points, though, with harsh
words exchanged about him among the press corps.

If the result is what matters, then surely Javier Saviola is player of the
night. His goal, 15 minutes into the first half, was a stunning combo of
careful passing, a back heel flick and the unhesitant finish of one who still
has much to prove. The only goal of the night becomes the defining instant.
It was a beauty, rather than a fluke, reminiscent of the careful passing the
World Cup squad displayed last summer.

reassuring presence. Who does Heinze think deserves the accolade then? He
shakes his head. "You can't single out one player," he says. "It's the team
that either gels or doesn't. It's our combined efforts. Always."

Earlier, at the stadium, during half-time, Arse`ne Wenger chats with an
Argentinian journalist. "Gabriel Milito," he said categorically. "A strong
and firm defender whose performance was outstanding. I wish I could afford
him!"

As the players enter the pitch for the second half, Saviola and Thierry Henry

at himself. In the universal language of football this means "can we swap
shirts after the match?" Thierry, head and shoulders taller than Saviola and
I mean that literally, hugs Saviola and kisses his head. After the game, I
ask Saviola if he got his shirt. He smiles like a child and nods.

當比賽下半場開始球員們陸續進入球場，Saviola 來到與 Thierry Henry 面對面的位置
。Saviola 拉起了他的球衣並指指 Henry，然後又指了自己；這是足球界的世界通用語言

Coco Basile, taking praise pragmatically, says there's no need for fireworks
yet. When all is said and done regarding the new Argentina he is beginning to
shape, he says from the heart: "It was amazing to watch Henry play live, I
had only seen him on the telly until tonight and I have to say he is
breathtaking. Even in defeat."

椰子 Basile 對讚揚看得很實際，並表示現在還用不著放煙火。當眾人都在談論一個新的
阿根廷隊即將成形，他發自內心地說：「看 Henry 現場演出實在讓人驚嘆。直到今晚之
前我只在電視上看過他，我必須說他真是讓我驚為天人，儘管他是落敗的一方。」
