At the end, the Mexicans came away with a 2-nil victory, a result which left the team at the top of the table in Group B of Copa America. In the other game of the evening, Chile came from behind to beat Ecuador 3-2. With just 5 minutes of play, the Mexican fans were yelling “Ole”, but the Brazilians showcased more creativity, mainly with striker Robinho. On 6 minutes, after a fine move by the Brazilians, Diego scored, by the assistant referee disallowed the goal due to an offside position. On 21 minutes, Robinho tried to score with a bicycle-kick after a Maicon cross. The ball flew over the crossbar, but the whole stadium applauded the move. Even the Mexican narrator said: “If Robinho had scored, the stadium would have gone into a frenzy”. Soon after the spectacular move by the Brazilian, Mexico hit back in stylish fashion. On 24 minutes, Nery Castillo received the ball at the edge of the box and lobbed Maicon before chipping the ball over keeper Doni, to break the deadlock. Brazil tried to level with Vagner Love, who missed the target. On 29 minutes, Diego fouled a player near the box. Ramon Morales left keeper Doni rooted with a textbook free-kick. With the two-nil lead, Mexico exchanged passes to run down the clock. A curious incident happened just before the break. Coach Hugo Sanchez chested a ball that went out, receiving the applause of the supporters. In the second half, Anderson, who replaced Diego, had the first chance to halve the gap. He chested the ball and fired a left-footer that scraped the Mexican upright. The opponents replied through Cacho, who headed the ball, on 55 minutes, forcing Doni to a spectacular save. On 57 minutes, Robinho found himself in front of keeper Guillermo Ochoa, who managed to deny the Brazilian goal. On the hour, Afonso volleyed an Anderson cross, but Ochoa was equal to the effort. On 68 minutes, Ochoa performed another miracle from an Anderson strike. On 71 minutes, Robinho shot in the far post after an individual play, but the ball hit the crossbar and didn’t go in. On 74 minutes, Maicon took a corner-kick, Alex headed the ball, but a defender cleared it on the goal-line. On 89 minutes, Ochoa denied Robinho once more. At the final whistle, the Mexicans won with a brilliant performance by shotstopper Ochoa.
