Ivan Gazidis says Arsenal future looks bright
James Olley
08.01.10
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis today claimed a takeover of the club is
not imminent.
Gazidis is not allowed to comment on the intentions of either American Stan
Kroenke or Alisher Usmanov, who hold 29.9 and 26 per cent shareholdings
respectively, due to Takeover Panel regulations.
Gazidis不被允許表達對Kroenke(29.9%)或者Usmanov(26%)的偏好
But one of the key differences between the pair's plans for the club's future
is thought to be Usmanov's willingness to make his personal wealth available
for manager Arsene Wenger to pursue the world's top stars.
Back in July, the Uzbek billionaire called for a rights issue and claimed he
would underwrite the club's debt - understood presently to be £297million -
amid concerns Wenger did not have the resources to compete for silverware at
home and in Europe.
By contrast, Kroenke has aligned himself with influential figures on the
board to the extent he bought shares from chairman Peter Hill-Wood and fellow
director Danny Fiszman.
The American businessman is on the threshold of reaching the 30 per cent mark
at which he would be formally obliged to launch a takeover.
But Gazidis said: "The great thing is if we don't live beyond our resources,
we will compete at the very highest levels for the foreseeable future. That
is a very strong position to be in.
"We're comfortable with the multi-ownership position that we're in. The club
has great stability. We've got a good functioning board and the financial
ability to operate without being dependent on any individual."
Kroenke bought shares from Fiszman at £9,200 each last May but has paid £
8,500 thereafter and is likely to wait until May this year to buy the
remainder at the lower amount.
"Unless and until somebody crosses the 30 per cent threshold, there's really
not very much happening," said Gazidis (right). "I've had no indication that
anything will change."
With injuries to Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner, Wenger is scouring
Europe for a striker but Gazidis maintained the club's prudence will continue
to be reflected in their transfer policy. "Spending money by giving it to
other clubs for their talent is not necessarily the answer to all issues,"
said the former MLS chief. "We spend only what we generate. We made record
profits last year [£35.2m] - that money is not all going out to the
shareholders as dividends but also back into the club and given to the
manager. We won't spend irrational amounts of money, but we have a healthy
transfer budget."
Captain Cesc Fabregas continues to be linked with a move back to his native
Spain but Gazidis insists the 22-year-old is happy at Arsenal.
He added: "We have had no contact from any club. Cesc could not have possibly
made it clearer that he is committed to Arsenal."

"It's ridiculous to suggest that a team could go through
a season without losing. It's comical, just comical !"
