Wenger wants common sense
Arsenal boss unhappy with Van Persie call
Arsene Wenger believes common sense must be applied to the debate over Robin
van Persie's call-up to the Holland squad.
The Arsenal striker has been sidelined since the end of August with an ankle
problem and only returned to training with the Gunners for the first time on
Friday.
Dutch boss Bert van Marwijk named the forward in his preliminary squad of 24
for the 17th November friendly against Turkey in Amsterdam earlier in the
week.
And Van Marwijk insists he will have 'no hesitation' in selecting Van Persie,
who missed a significant chunk of last term after suffering serious ankle
ligament damage in a friendly with Italy in November 2009.
But Wenger believes he is well within his rights to query the inclusion of a
player who has not featured in a competitive match since sustaining his
current problem against Blackburn on 28th August.
Surreal
"At the moment, Robin van Persie is coming back from injury, we are concerned
to use him at our club and you can understand we are a bit less concerned
that he automatically plays in a friendly," Wenger said.
"Everyone of you has common sense and can completely agree with that. It does
not look to me surreal that we wish him to play for us.
"Holland is not my problem at the moment, my problem is to play the game
against Newcastle on Sunday. All the rest is down to the rules that are in
place in the international game.
"What can I do about that? Not a lot.
"I am not a big influence on that and I believe the most important thing is
that we prepare well for our game on Sunday, try to win the game and let
everybody else talk."
Worst game
With club fixtures continuing thick and fast, Wenger believes the scheduling
of the latest round of internationals is not very productive.
"If you consider we play in the Carling Cup, the Champions League, the
championship, and you look at the friendly, you could say it is not ideally
situated for us," he said.
"It may be the worst moment, but not only for Arsenal, for many clubs.
"However, we are not all in front of the same problems, for example, there is
England v France, which is the worst game for Arsenal because now we have
many players from England and from France, so we might have a big call-up
there."
