Yesterday I spent much of the afternoon checking and double checking some
information I received regarding Eden Hazard and the state of his reported
transfer to Arsenal in the summer.

Using a mixture of sources (including information from private discussions
with journalists), I am 100% certain the following information is correct. It
is even said that some journalists have convinced Hazard that Arsenal is the
club for him.

Arsenal have first refusal on Eden and are wanting to bring him to the club
in the summer after watching him for a long time, they worked long and hard
with Lille to secure this right and it is testament to just how highly they
rate him. Arsene Wenger is a massive fan of his.

Eden has had discussions with Wenger himself and is happy with what he had to
say. It is believed he will be under less pressure at Arsenal than he would
be at Real Madrid or any of his other suitors, who I will move onto later
because there are plenty of them.

Personal terms are agreed but there is an issue with Lille, they are asking
for a very large amount of cash indeed and this is way beyond the amount I
could envisage Arsenal spending, journalist friends believe it could be
anything up to, and more than, ￡30m. (WTF)

However much potential he may have he is certainly not worth that, please
remember that this is a player who does not play regular Champions League
football and has only played 17 internationals for Belgium. It is also worth
remembering that there have been suggestions that he is lazy by his national
coach Georges Leekens, these have been strongly refuted by his coach at
Lille, pointing to his young age as a reason.

Arsenal are very much in the front seat in this deal, the links between the
club, manager and Lille could prove vital if any deal is to happen because
Lille must drop their asking price drastically – and I think they will.
However, if a big player such as Man City get wind of him they could blow us
all out the water, despite Arsenal having first refusal, they can’t pay mega
money.

There are other interested parties, the big Spanish clubs, Inter Milan and
Manchester United but Hazard wants to come to Arsenal, the ball really is in
Lille’s court now; Arsenal don’t want to miss out on the chance of signing
a potentially world-class player, but won’t pay above ￡14m. That fee would
even be paid in sizable installments, if Lille accepted it.

From a personal point of view we could maybe use the fact that we have Gilles
Sunu to our advantage, even to lessen the hit financially and do a player
plus cash deal. I am though confident we can lower Lille’s asking price, but
will we be able to lower it enough? I wouldn’t like to say.

There have been suggestions that the rumours around Arsenal bidding for Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain may lessen the chances of Eden Hazard joining in the
summer, however no approach has been made by any club for Oxlade-Chamberlain
and Arsenal have done no more than scout the Southampton youngster.

So there is the update. There have been many people asking me about the
Hazard situation so I thought I would try and learn a bit more about it and
bring you the information. A lot of work has gone into making sure (multiple
times) that this is correct. A deal may not happen due to Lille’s demands,
but this is the situation the player, Lille and Arsenal are in.
