http://0rz.tw/1f4LD Infielder Iguchi rejoins Phillies Second baseman played key role in 2007 playoff push NEW YORK -- Without Tadahito Iguchi, the Phillies' 2007 drive to the postseason would have been bumpier. If Taguchi, swiftly acquired on July 27 of last season, hadn't softened the five-week loss of Chase Utley to a broken hand by batting .301 in 27 starts hitting second in the order, Philadelphia might have stubbed a toe in its march to the playoffs. "He helped us," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He did very good until Chase got back." Now Iguchi is back, four days after being released by the Padres. He has agreed to a contract with the Phillies and is expected to join the team before Saturday's game against the Mets. But because he joined the roster after Aug. 31, he isn't eligible to play in the postseason. Iguchi appeared in 77 games with San Diego this season, batting .231 with two homers and 24 RBIs. He missed nearly two months with a separated right shoulder and was released to make room for top prospect Matt Antonelli. The right-handed-hitting Iguchi, acquired in 2007 for Minor League pitcher Michael Dubee, the son of pitching coach Rich Dubee, batted .304 overall and served as a pinch-hitter after Utley returned. "He can handle the bat, hit the ball to the opposite field, bunt," Manuel said. "He's got a little pop. He can get a big hit for you. He'll give you a professional at-bat when you send him up. More than likely, he'll put the ball in play, and he knows how to play the game." The Phillies pursued Iguchi last winter, offering him the chance to play third, but he signed with the Padres to be closer to Japan and to play second base. The Los Angeles Times, citing Iguchi's agent, Rocky Hall, reported on Friday that the Dodgers and Phillies had inquired about him. Iguchi's arrival prompted So Taguchi to lament about a potential issue. The outfielder confessed that he is often confused with Iguchi because of their similar last names. "I deal with it," Taguchi said. "We're both good-looking." Manuel, a former star in Japan, said that the Phillies had one more request for a Far East player. "I want [Japanese all-time home run king] Sadaharu Oh," he said. -- __●__ ●︵ \ / ●︵ \●| (● |●| ●︵ \●| E︶ E︶ E︶ || |﹀ |﹀ | \ /| | | |﹀ | \ -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.91.84.50
