Dodgers, Saito in 'staredown'
Takashi Saito, the National League's best reliever over the past two years
according to the Elias Rankings, could be non-tendered Friday, as Dodgers
general manager Ned Colletti described contract negotiations "a staredown
right now."
Saito, 39 in Feburary, earned $2 million this year and the Dodgers don't
want to engage in an arbitration process that could double the figure
because of uncertainty over a partially torn elbow ligament. He was
sidelined for two months during the season and had the club leave him off
the roster for the NL Championship Series. He's been offered an
incentive-laden contract, but if he doesn't take it, the club might cut him
loose into a soft free-agent market.
Because of Saito's situation, the Dodgers are looking for an affordable
veteran reliever. Trevor Hoffman's name has surfaced, but the club's interest
appears to be lukewarm.
