Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros gave second baseman Kazuo
Matsui his unconditional release following Wednesday's 7-3 victory over the
Colorado Rockies.
Matsui was hitting .141 with 10 strikeouts in 27 games (19 starts) entering
Wednesday night's game, which he did not play in.
The 34-year-old signed with Houston as a free agent in December 2007. In 630
career contests with the Mets, Rockies, and Astros, Matsui has batted .267
with 211 RBI, 32 homers, and 102 stolen bases.
The transaction will officially go into effect on Thursday. If Matsui is not
claimed by another team within two business days (by May 24), he will become
an unrestricted free agent.
Houston also purchased the contract of infielder Oswaldo Navarro from
Triple-A Round Rock.
Entering play Wednesday, Navarro was hitting .312 in 20 games at Round Rock
with three home runs and 19 RBI. He had a brief stint in the majors with the
Mariners in 2006, during which he was 2-for-3 in four games.
