Zheng Upsets Raymond in First Round
VIENNA, Austria - The Wien Energie Grand Prix is off to a surprising start,
with No.3 seed Lisa Raymond bowing out in the first round. Raymond fell to
China's Jie Zheng (right), ranked more than 30 spots behind Raymond. Zheng
upset the American 63 62 for her second notable upset of the season. She
upset world No.15 Jelena Dokic earlier this year in Doha en route to her
third career Tour quarterfinal.
Zheng's next opponent is Lubomira Kurhajcova, who upended fellow countrywoman
Ludmila Cervanova 63 61.
Austrian wildcard Yvonne Meusburger scored the second upset of the day,
beating world No. 74 Maria Elena Camerin 76(4) 61. Meusburger recently won
her first WTA Tour main draw match at Budapest two weeks ago. This win serves
as her second WTA Tour main draw victory.
No.5 seed Amy Frazier defeated Ana Ivanovic 64 61 in her first appearance in
Vienna. She meets Nicole Pratt in the second round, who struggled but
overcame Denisa Chladkova 76(5) 75.
