HOUSTON (TICKER) —Dave Smith, a former All-Star reliever for the Houston Astros, has died from an apparent heart attack. He was 53. Smith, who passed away Wednesday, played with the Astros from 1980 through 1990 before spending the final two years of his career with the Chicago Cubs. A two-time All-Star, Smith compiled a record of 53-53 with a 2.67 ERA and 216 saves over 609 games. He holds the Astros’career record with 586 appearances and is second in team history with 199 saves. “The Houston Astros are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of our former pitcher, Dave Smith,”the Astros said in a statement.
