Garciaparra announcement to come Friday

(From Chronicle Staff Writer Susan Slusser in Phoenix)

A source close to Nomar Garciaparra tells me that the A's have already agreed
to terms on a one-year deal with the veteran infielder and that the team will
announce the signing on Friday.

Garciaparra had been weighing retirement vs. the A's offer, but he must like
the direction the team is heading in, especially after Oakland signed Orlando
Cabrera on Monday

The Carbrera deal isn't official yet, either, because some medical
documentation needs to be completed, but he is expected to be in camp
Thursday so the deal could be announced any time between now and then.

Garciaparra, 35, will be the backup third baseman and first baseman and will
be a right-handed bat off the bench.
