Gaudin signs new deal with A's


Right-hander Chad Gaudin, released by the Yankees last Thursday, did not take
long to find a new team.

Gaudin, 27, reached agreement Sunday with the A’s, according to major- league
sources.

The A’s signed Gaudin to a major-league deal and likely will use him out of
the bullpen to start the season.

Gaudin pitched for the A’s from 2006 to July 2008, serving as both a starter
and reliever before getting traded to the Cubs along with right-hander Rich
Harden.

Three of the A’s right-handed relievers — Michael Wuertz, Joey Devine and
closer Andrew Bailey — currently are dealing with ailments of varying degrees.

Gaudin was effective against right-handed hitters last season, holding them
to a batting/on-base/slugging line of .224./.293/.380.

However, he had an 8.68 ERA this spring, and failed to become a factor in the
competition to be the Yankees’ fifth starter.

The Yankees owe Gaudin $737,500 in termination pay — one-fourth of his
original $2.95 million contract. The terms of his deal with the A’s are not
yet known.
