Scouting Report
Hitting ability: Thompson has an unconventional swing, but it's simple and
short, and he makes consistent contact.
Power: He has plus power to all fields.
Running speed: He has below-average speed.
Base running: It's not a part of his game.
Arm strength: He has plus arm strength from third.
Fielding: His hands are suitable for third.
Range: He has very limited range, which is why some see a move to first base in
his future.
Physical Description: Thompson is a big, hulking corner infielder with a Paul
Konerko body type.
Medical Update: Thompson was shaking off the rust after missing the first chunk
of the season with a broken kneecap.
Strengths: Plus power to all fields and good overall hitting skills when 100
percent.
Weaknesses: Coming off the kneecap injury, he's been a bit rusty. His size and
lack of agility could mean a move to first base.
Summary: Despite missing a chunk of his junior season because of a broken
kneecap, Thompson will still likely attract attention at the Draft. He has as
much power as any college bat in this class. With a short stroke, he's been a
good overall hitter as well. He might be limited to first base defensively,
though his arm is plus and he has decent hands. Assuming he's healthy, though,
he has the kind of power bat that would play just fine at first.
