Suzuki signed to four-year, $16.25 million contract - more details

This has been in the works for some time - dating back to last offseason, going
through the spring - but the A's have finally wrapped up a multi-year contract
for catcher Kurt Suzuki, with four years at a guaranteed $16.25 million, and a
fifth year, 2014, that kicks in with a vesting option based on games played,
with the number just under 120 games. With the vesting option, the deal could
be worth $25-26 million.
UPDATE: I now have the breakdown of the deal: Suzuki gets $600,000 this year
with a $150,000 signing bonus; $3.4 million in 2011; $5 million in 2012; $6.45
million in 2013. The club holds an option for $8.5 million in 2014, with a
$650,000 buyout, but there is also the vesting option that kicks in for that
year if Suzuki plays in at least 118 games in 2013. The vesting option is worth
$9.25 million.
That means that Suzuki, the team's best all-around player, is signed through
his arbitration years. The vesting option would take care of his first year of
free agency. Suzuki's current contract for 2010, a one-year deal signed this
spring, is supplanted by this deal.
It's a good deal for both sides, and Suzuki, 26, is such a central, important
figure for the team, this is a significant move. He and Brett Anderson, signed
to a multi-year deal earlier this year, could be working together a long time.
