NSW bus drivers will go ahead with a strike on Friday.
They say the state government’s offer of a six per cent pay rise over two
years is too little, too late.
Rail Tram and Bus Union spokesman Raul Baonza said the State Transit
Authority (STA) refused to let union members attend a meeting to decide on
strike action on Thursday night.
He said drivers would now proceed with a 24-hour strike.
On Thursday night, Premier Kristina Keneally confirmed the government would
honour an offer of wage increases of three per cent backdated from June 12
this year and a further three per cent from June 12 next year.
"In the current economic climate, State Transit Authority’s offer of a six
per cent pay rise is fair and generous," Ms Keneally said in a statement.
But Mr Baonza said it was too little, too late.
"The government has had six months to give us a sensible offer, and now at
the last minute they put something on the table and expect us to just accept
it.
"The strike is expected to affect up to 600,000 commuters in Sydney and
Newcastle."
