KLM slashes Taipei fares

KLM will halt its Bangkok-Taipei service, 26 March,
due to poor yields and uplift focusing instead on a nonstop service linking
Amsterdam and Taipei.
The airline introduced its closing sale by selling tickets at Bt7,260
ex-Bangkok to Taipei.
Once KLM ends its Taipei service, just three airlines will serve the route;
China Airlines, EVA Air, and Thai Airways International.
The airline is also re-routing its nonstop service, Manila -Amsterdam, via
Taipei.
The move reduces the airline’s financial obligations under the Philippines
Common Carrier Tax and Gross Philippine Billing tax, which it claims is a
substantial burden for all foreign airlines operating to and from the
Philippines.
After halting the Taipei service, the airline will alter its schedule for the
Bangkok-Amsterdam service. It will depart Suvarnabhumi Airport midday at
1220, rather than 2329. The flight from Amsterdam will then depart earlier at
1750 rather than 2045.
The Shock Sales promotion is good for booking online until 18 March and for
travel up until 25 March.
The Bt7,260 deal is well below that quoted by other competitors, but KLM
traditionally cut fares on the Bangkok-Taipei sector.
For travel during the same period, THAI sells its lowest online economy fare
at Bt14,440. EVA Air sells at Bt10,815 and China Airlines at Bt11,115.
KLM’s business class fare on the route sells at Bt12,160, while EVA Air and
China Airlines quote Bt19,315 and Bt19,815 respectively. THAI’s business
fare sells at Bt33,790.
They will be relieved to see KLM give up this route. The daily service kept
an aircraft flying rather than parking it in Bangkok for an entire day
waiting for the late night departure to Europe. But it was never a
