Hawaiian Airlines to end flights between Honolulu and Fukuoka, Japan

Hawaiian Airlines said Wednesday that it is ending its service between
Honolulu International Airport and Fukuoka in June due to a lack of demand
for the daily flights to the city in Southern Japan.
Honolulu-based Hawaiian, which launched the route nearly two years ago,
said the final flight to Fukuoka will depart Honolulu on June 29,
returning to Hawaii on June 30.
Fukuoka was became the third destination in Japan, after Tokyo and Osaka,
in 2012 for Hawaiian, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: HA).
Since 2012, Hawaiian also flies to Sendai and Sapporo in Japan and
has no plans to change those routes.
“Unfortunately, despite two years of effort, we have not seen sufficient
passenger growth to justify continuing this service,” President and CEO
Mark Dunkerley said in a statement.
Former Hawaii Gov. George Ariyoshi and his wife were among the passengers
aboard the inaugural flight in April 2012 to the capital of Fukuoka
Prefecture, which has a sister-city relationship with Honolulu.
Hawaiian Airlines ended service on another international route, between
Honolulu and Manila in the Philippines, last summer.
