☆ In Rising Tide (Inglehart and Morris, 2003),the │
│ authors contend that there is an inexorable tide │
│ toward gender equality in nations which have │
│ undergone transformation to post industrial │
‧ societies as well as societal modernization. │
★ │
This speech takes issue with this optimistic finding,
│ highlighting issues related to gender equality,
│ feminism and backlash against social change.
★ .
│ The speech attempts to demonstrate that while gains
│ made be made for a variety of reasons, including
│ domestic women's mobilization,institutional responsiveness
│ at the national level, and the forces of political
│ globalization and transnational feminism, such gains
│ are not static and necessarily permanent.

│ Counter mobilization related to regime change, forces of partisanship
▇ sometimes coupled with religion,as well the effective use of symbols
˙ and slogans may reinforce traditional values related to women and act
. as a brake on their progress. The paper explores the impact of
│
│ against feminist
progress in the United States and Japan, two
│
│ neo -liberal states with very different political and religious
│
│ foundations.
│
│ │
│ The study also focuses on the interaction between social movements
│ and counter movements,a topic of relatively recent vintage.
│ The history of feminist advocacy and impact in Japan and the United
│ States has provided examples of both movement success and also │
│ opposition which seeks to limit further change. Movements and policies
│ often may undergo cycles of intense activity as well as periods of│
│ greater quiescence in which activism is more muted. │
