Cheeks and the Portland Trail Blazers have talked about a contract
extension but couldn't come to a meeting of the minds. Barring
a surprise agreement, Cheeks will enter this season, his third,
with one year remaining on his contract plus a team option for
2004-05. The Blazers, in effect, are leaving thier options open.
Contracts rarely prevent coaches from being fired, but this is
almost symbolic: The Blazers have the right to ask Cheeks back
after this season, or they also could tell him the relationships
is over and be obligated to pay him for the next season.
