Blazers May Need to Add Koponen Now
If the Trail Blazers want to have Petteri Koponen in their organization
sometime in the next four or five years, they’ll probably have to sign him
to a contract soon.
如果拓荒者未來四五年想要Koonen加入的話，最好最近就要簽約了。
The 6-4, 195-pound point guard from Finland will be auditioning with Portland
’s entry in the Las Vegas Summer League, with the Blazers opening play on
Monday.

Blazer coaches and its management team won’t be the only ones watching.
Representatives from pro teams in Spain and Italy, among others, will be on
hand to scout Koponen, 20, the last pick in the first round of the 2007 draft
– a pick owned by Philadelphia and purchased for $3 million by Portland.

If the Blazers don’t sign Koponen, he’ll sign in Europe – and it won’t be
a one-year deal.

“I’m a young player, and the (European) clubs want me to sign a four- or
five-year contract," Koponen says. “Then the buyout will be so big, it’s
hard to come here."

Koponen’s coach, Mihailo Pavicevic, says Koponen had several offers of about
$500,000 from European teams last year, and that the size of the offers will
increase this year.

“Those teams want to lock him in, and there is a very large buyout,”
Pavicevic says.

toward a buyout is $500,000.

“He did a good job last year, but he can’t stay one second longer in Finland
because of the level of play. If he doesn’t sign with Portland, he’ll sign
in Europe.” And if that happens? Pavicevic sighs, then smiles. “I don’t even
want to think about it,” he says. “He can make bigger money in Europe. I’m
not his agent; I’m just his coach. I advise him about basketball. My position
is, he didn’t take this money last year. Everybody tried to push him to go to
Europe. I believe he’ll make the NBA; that was the only reason (he didn’t go
to Europe). “Now, the situation is, I really like the Portland organization.
Great people. Petteri is a point guard. He understands the game. He is young
and needs to learn a lot, but he can be a very important part of this
organization. I would like to see him play well in Las Vegas and prove what he
can do.”

Now Pritchard wants to see how far Koponen’s game has come before deciding
whether to extend a training camp invitation. So a lot will be riding on
Koponen’s summer league performances, and he admits he will feel the pressure.
“But I have to be ready for that,” Koponen said. “There’s always some
pressure, and when I feel a little bit of pressure, I’m more ready than if I
don’t feel anything.”
現在KP想要看一下Koponen的能耐到哪來決定是否邀請他來訓練營，所以一切都決定在
Koponen夏季聯盟的表現。Koponen也承認他感覺到一些壓力。
