[外電] Summertime for Outlaw means work

It hasn't been a good summer for Travis Outlaw back home in Mississippi. He
has slumped terribly in his favorite pastime -- fishing -- and he's not happy
about it.

對Outlaw來說，回Mississippi的這個暑假不大好過，因為他沒釣到什麼魚。

"I lost my fishing license," Outlaw said. "That's what we call it back there
--if you don't catch anything, you lose your license."

There is, however, a reason for his drought. Much to the delight of the Trail
Blazers, Outlaw this summer has been spending less time fishing and more time
working out to improve his already growing basketball game. Outlaw's
commitment was epitomized last week by his flying to Portland for a series of
individual workouts with assistant coach Monty Williams.

對拓荒者來說卻是樂見的事，因為Outlaw就會花較少的時間在釣魚，轉而去做訓練。他上

It is a major development for those inside the Blazers offices. Although last
season was the best in Outlaw's five-year career, it was hampered by a slow
first month of the season, which coach Nate McMillan blamed on Outlaw being
out of shape.

In the first 16 games, Outlaw averaged 9.4 points and shot 41.8 percent from
the field. Once he played himself into shape, which Outlaw figures came around
December, when he hit the game-winning shot in Memphis to start the Blazers'
13-game winning streak, Outlaw averaged 14.5 points while shooting 43.5
percent in the final 66 games.

"He is a better player when he is in shape, and he knows that," McMillan said.
"So conditioning is big for him. And you can tell he has thought about that.

what he needed to do this summer. And he's really working hard."

Last summer, Outlaw signed a three-year, $12 million free agent contract, then
did little to prepare for the season. He said he didn't want to injure himself
while working out, but he quickly realized that was the wrong approach when he
reported to training camp and failed McMillan's conditioning test.

So this summer, Outlaw has committed himself to working out four times a week,
during which he runs, shoots and works on his ball handling.

"The difference between what I'm doing this summer and last summer is like
night and day," Outlaw said.

"You can already see his body changing," Williams said. "And he's talking
about lifting more. Part of that is vanity, but who cares? If it gets done, it

tremendous for him."

The left hand

McMillan has already announced that he will move Outlaw from power forward to
small forward next season, putting a greater emphasis on Outlaw's perimeter
game. Although his shot has always been effective, Outlaw's half-court
mobility has been hampered because he has trouble dribbling with his left hand.
As a result, the Blazers were reduced to playing Outlaw only on the left side
of the basket, where he could dribble to his right.

So the emphasis during Outlaw's four-day trip to Portland was ball handling,
particularly with his left hand. Williams would have Outlaw simultaneously
dribble balls with each hand, moving forward, backward and to each side. The
theory is that during all that movement, Outlaw has to keep dribbling with his
left hand.

"It's putting together drills that force him not to dribble with his right,

In addition, Williams is trying to break Outlaw's habit of dribbling while
looking down. Outlaw says Williams is harping on him to keep his head up so he
can see the court and find open teammates.

"That will help me create for others rather than just myself," said Outlaw,

McMillan said he still envisions using Outlaw off the bench this season
because he fits better with the second unit, where he won't have to compete for
shot attempts with Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden. Also, McMillan
figures Martell Webster, the team's other small forward, is better suited for
the starting unit because he is the team's best three-point shooter, which
wil be needed when opponents double-team Aldridge and Oden inside.

"He is as big a part of this team as Brandon, in the sense that he is a guy
who can score against anybody," McMillan said. "So when you talk about guys
you'd hate not having for a game, he's right up there for us. And I think he

Outlaw agrees he has more to give, and more to accomplish. He turns 24 in

"I think he sees guys out there who he has dominated on occasion, and he
starts to wonder, 'Wait a minute, if I put in consistent effort, why can't I be

fits, and when we played the Lakers, they had Kobe on him. So I think he is
realizing, 'OK, maybe all this work pays off.' "

hometown of Starkville, Miss., he finds himself using his left hand more
often, and with success.

"It's almost to the point where I can rely on it," Outlaw said. "It's still a

Now, if only the fish were right there. He has a penchant for bass and brim,
but right now he says he's not picky.

"Anything that bites my hook, I'm pretty happy," Outlaw said. "But nothing
I've been catching is of any size."

The real catch, Williams says, is Outlaw's realization and application to get
better this summer.

him once that he is going to get to be my age and wished he would have worked.
I think that sunk in. Because what he is doing now will pay off; he won't have

his career."
