[外電] Bayless' debut: 'I think he has a chance to be good'

Jerryd Bayless looked more like a scorer than a point guard Monday night in
the Trail Blazers' Summer League opener, but that was just fine with the
Trail Blazers management and coaching staff.

Bayless, the Blazers' first-round pick, had a game-high 28 points _ which
included 18-of-23 free throws _ to lead the Blazers to a 78-73 win over
Washington in the Las Vegas Summer League opener for both teams.

Bayless was disappointed with his shot _ he made 5-of-12 from the field _ but
he was virtually unstoppable with his penetration and showed great strength

Pavilion crowd with a block that was ruled goal tending after he reached to
nearly the top of the white box above the rim.

The Blazers' brain trust has touted this Summer League as a chance to
determine if Bayless can play point guard _ particularly in handling and
applying pressure. But I think more and more they are realizing that the
19-year-old from Arizona is a scorer, and that he won't need to be a pure
point guard.

"I mean, let's face it: Brandon (Roy) is the guy who is going to have the
ball for us,'' Pritchard said. "I think Jerryd can handle pressure though,
and that's what he is going to have to do: Get us into the offense and give
Brandon the ball, or give (Greg) Oden the ball.'

My greatest criticism of Bayless after Monday was that he dribbled too much,
and nearly all of the dribbling was to create his own shot, not to find an
opening for a teammate. But Pritchard and the Blazers scouts said they want
Bayless to do that here in Vegas, and that when the real Blazers team
convenes in October there will be more openings or opportunities for Bayless
to find scorers.

In other words, Bayless is so much better than the rest of his Summer League
teammates that he should be trying to score nearly every time he touches the
ball. Regardless, I asked Pritchard if he felt Bayless dribbled too much on
Monday.

"I kind of want him to do that,'' Pritchard said. "I want him to probe. This

Clearly, Bayless is a special talent around the basket. He is strong, has
great body control and he has a definite element of fearlessness. McMillan,
who goes into every game stressing the need to win the free-throw battle, was
practically salivating after watching Bayless hit 18-of-23 from the line.

"I love his ability to attack the basket,'' McMillan said. "He's not afraid

Free throws were one area McMillan lamented last season, particularly late in
games. The Blazers last season were primarily a perimeter team, and struggled
to get teams into the bonus midway through the fourth quarter, putting even
more of an emphasis on hitting the outside shot. Now, with the craftiness of
Roy, the addition of powerful center Greg Oden and slashing guard Rudy
Fernandez, and the attacking Bayless, the Blazers are envisioning last
season's weakness at getting to the line turning into an immediate strength.

McMillan said he imagines Summer League coach Monty Williams will play
Bayless more at point guard over the next four games, after which he will
make a more concise evaluation of Bayless' future at point. But for the
moment, McMillan termed Bayless' debut as "Good. It was good.''
