There is encouraging news from the Canary Islands in Spain, where Trail
Blazers shooting coach John Townsend has been working with point guard Sergio
Rodriguez for the past week.

Towsend reports that Rodriguez is improving steadily with his outside shot,
which included a session Thursday during which Rodriguez hit 10 straight
three-pointers from the right corner.

"He's really in a groove right now,'' Townsend said from his hotel in
Tenerife.

The developments come as welcomed news to the Blazers, who wondered aloud how
Rodriguez would respond this summer after being left off Spain's Olympic
team. Rodriguez also declined an invitation to participate on the Blazers'
Summer League team in Las Vegas, electing instead to return to the Canary
Islands. The fear with the Blazers was that a distraught Rodriguez would mope
and pout this summer instead of taking strides to improve his game.

Townsend arrived in Spain last week and will stay until next Wednesday.
Townsend said he has altered Rodriguez's shot mechanics, particularly in his

Last season Rodriguez struggled mightily with his shot, which usually had a

respected his outside shot, thereby allowing teams to sag off him, helping
take away his ability to penetrate.

European 18 and Under championship four years ago. One day, they worked on
hitting runners off pick-and-rolls to the right. The next day they worked on
floaters when he penetrates to his left. And today, they worked on dribble-up
three-pointers.

Throughout every workout, Townsend charts the shots and keeps a percentage.
Townsend said that last summer, James Jones and Steve Blake would go through
a session and finish hitting 80 percent of their shots. He said Sergio is
hitting about 60 percent.

"So he has some improvement to make,'' Townsend said. "But today, there were

date. That Rodriguez is already talking about reporting, let alone on Aug.
15, has sent ripples through the organization, which has never characterized
Rodriguez as an ardent worker.

The wider stripes and the distinct colors make it easier for the shooter to

Townsend said he has experienced a happy and relaxed Rodriguez, but also a
player who is set on working. In fact, Townsend said that Rodriguez and
Suarez actually requested that their sessions be extended from 60 minutes to
90 minutes.

All the while, Townsend has experienced how big Rodriguez is in his homeland.

"And I have taken more pictures here than I ever have in my life. Anytime
someone sees him, they rush to me and extend a camera, wanting me to take a
picture of them with Sergio. He's a big, big, deal.''

And now, with a renewed work ethic to improving his shot, who knows how big
Rodriguez can become in Portland.
