Talking grades, family and ping-pong, this Arizona Wildcat opens up about his newest business venture. ~Kendahl Damico Fresh from the six-day NBA Rookie Transition Program, Portland Trail Blazers rookie Jerryd Bayless already sounds like a seasoned vet when it comes to his Media Relations skills. The Indiana Pacers No. 11 pick is casual and comfortable when he picks up the phone, the faint sounds of the “Steve Harvey Show” in the background, but as the interview gets underway, Bayless suddenly changes his tone and behaves the way any good, smart, well-trained athlete should: politely and professionally. Putting into practice the lessons he has just learned from the seminar, Bayless begins to answer my questions dutifully. “It [Rookie Transition Program] went well. It was a great experience. It was very formal, but it makes you realize that it’s not a game anymore; it’s a business. You’re in the real world now. You’re playing for a lot of money. It’s not a joke; it’s not a game.” Considering the repercussions Bayless’ peers Darrell Arthur and Mario Chalmers had to bare at the mercy of the RTP, I’d say Bayless is indeed on his way to realizing the business that is the NBA. And at the ripe ol’ age of 20 years old, Bayless is already a hell of a businessman. Declaring early for the draft as an Arizona Wildcat, Bayless chose to trade the traditional college experience for longer practice hours, sponsorship deals and more rules. “You’ve got a lot more free time in college. It’s a little different [than the NBA],” says Bayless making the understatement of the year. On top of the pressures of being an NBA newbie, this University of Arizona Sophomore is still pursuing his Law degree, though he’s not entirely sure a courtroom is where he’ll wind up. Could we be seeing the makings of the next David Falk, the next great sports agent? “I don’t know. It interests me, but maybe more of an entertainment agent. I ’m not really sure. Right now I’m going to school for Law.” I’m starting to realize that his no-nonsense answers aren’t necessarily a product of his NBA education, but rather a quality that comes naturally for a 3.6 GPA student who also happens to be a basketball star. Growing up in a household of two working parents—Dad a psychologist and mom a college counselor— and an older brother who rivaled Bayless in the classroom and on the court, academics never took a backseat to basketball or any other interest. “I never got bad grades, my family always stressed that. I’ve always gotten good grades.” Speaking of other interests, word is the St. Mary’s High School alum plays a mean game of ping-pong, just like his peer and No. 1 Chicago Bulls pick Derrick Rose. “Derrick is terrible. I want you quoting me on that. He is horrible. I played him at the RTP. I played him at the pre-draft camp. Derrick can’t play.” Could this be a foreshadowing of the trash talkin’ we might see on the court between the two rookies? “I’ve known Derrick since freshman year of high school. It was always competitive between us. Growing up with him, I’ve watched his journey and he ’s watched mine. I want him to do well and I’m sure he wants the same for me.” So much for a heated rivalry on the court; the table, however, may be another story.
