You travel to Portland with the support of an Olympic silver medal and a big
performance in the final. I suppose that that must fill you with confidence.
Certainly. The Olympic final has been a springboard, the public of the USA
could watch me and I could show that I can compete against the NBA players.
Perhaps physically I am still not there. But perhaps I have other things that
they do not have, just as they have many things that I do not have.
There was a special play: the dunk against Dwight Howard.
Yes, it is a play that has become famous. I believe that now they know me
more, but I suppose that he will not forget and will want to return the favor
to me when we play against him, so I will try not to be very close to him.
The people say to me that in the USA they have watched it repeatedly. The US
players congratulated me after the final, including Kobe Bryant, who has been
one of my idols. It is a satisfaction. His words have a lot of meaning for me.
Also your coach Nate McMillan has praised you after the final.
Something incredible everything what he have said on me. The American
newspapers that I have seen were telling that he was very happy because of I
could go to Portland and he could train me. Right now I want to be there, I
want him watching me, be able to play minutes. But it′s not important what
is said but the facts and I hope that everything will become true.
Has he given you any special message?
I Have spoken with him by phone these days and he has said to me that I
should switch on my batteries in the pre-season and that I should come in
shape. For me it is a new experience, because I have had only two coaches in
my career: Aíto and Pepu. I believe that McMillan trusts very much on me and
thinks that I can be important in the team.
Do you worry about the physical aspects?
Right now I know that physically I have to improve. I have to get some
weight, a little of musculature. But I do not want to put myself like any
players that I have seen. And I do not want to get obsessed with the physical
topic, because if I do it, I can even lose what has made me come there.
Do you feel nervous before your debut?
This is the most difficult step that I have given in my career after taking
the decision to come from Majorca to Barcelona when I was only 12 years old.
The NBA is not only a physical challenge. Also it is a mental one. There is
an added pressure, because there are many people whose hopes are placed on
me. But I do not want to put preasure on me. I do not know if I′ll have the
minutes that I hope or some people hope.
NBA
There are players like Jasikevicius, Macijauskas and Navarro, who have had to
come back to Europe. Are you afraid that it could happen to you also?
There is always a little fear, but it is normal. All the Spanish who have
gone there have said to me that the first rookie year is very complicated. It
can go well or badly, but at least I will have seen it and will have had the
opportunity to face the best of the world. And if I have to return I do not
think that it is a step backwards.
What advices have been given to you by your Spanish national teammates Gasol,
Calderon and Navarro who have already lived through this experience?
That I should be mentally prepared. We already know that I′m able to play in
the NBA, but mentally I must be prepared. Because it can happen that I don′t
play a second in four games in a row and then I play the four following ones.
It is a radical change, difficult to assimilate, but you have to be prepared
for everything.
There are the people who hopes even to see you this year in the All Star and
fighting for the rookie of the year.
I don′t think about the All Star right now. It is not in the list of
challenges for my first season. The only purpose is to play minutes. I know
that my role will be different from the one I have had in the Penya, although
I see myself qualified to be right in it, to play minutes and to have an
important role. Then, if the All Star comes for whatever reason, it will be
an extra, it will mean that I am doing a good work and it will be nice.
I suppose that you already know what is the rival in your debut.
Yes, I play in Los Angeles against the Lakers and my friend Pau Gasol. I′m
excited a lot about it. To be able to make my debut in Staples Center is
almost incredible. I hope to be able to enjoy winning and scoring a basket
"in the face of Pau".
What do you think about the Joventut for this season?
I like it very much. Very interesting players have incorporated and I believe
that the Penya can have a good season. The only thing is that it is not
possible to put now the pressure on Ricky. He is 17 years old and the
pressure must be shared by everybody. We all know that Ricky has an
incredible talent, but sometimes pressure is too much, although I believe
that mentally Ricky is ready and is going to have a great season. It happened
to me in my second year, that the people were fixing more in me that in the
team and that harmed me.
