One on One with Kevin Pritchard
It's been a long time coming but the Portland Trail Blazers are finally putting
the pieces of the puzzle together.

No one knows this better than General Manager Kevin Pritchard. Yet Pritchard -
along with head coach Nate McMillan and the rest of the team - will be the
first to tell you the Blazers haven't earned anything yet. They plan to walk
that walk this year. Greg Oden is healthy, Brandon Roy is steadily making his
way back after offseason surgery, Rudy Fernandez is finally in Portland and the
Blazers' bandwagon is filling-up quickly.

So with Portland opening training camp next Tuesday and expectations high,
HOOPSWORLD talks with Kevin Pritchard about the latest news in Portland and his
thoughts on the fast approaching season….

近一些新聞，和一些對於即將開季的看法。
Obviously it's been a busy week for you guys. Let me start with a little Rudy
Fernandez talk. We've heard about his impressive overall game, but how do you
see him making certain players better? How does he make Brandon Roy a better
player?
H: 明顯的，對你們來說，最近幾個禮拜很忙。讓我們從Rudy開始聊起，我們對他在比賽裡

Well, number one is he can take the pressure off of Brandon at times instead of
Brandon having to take the offensive load. But I do believe this: the whole
team can do that. Sometimes we put a lot of pressure on one player with scoring
and usually teams sort of have a balance - not sort of, they do - have a
balanced attack, and I think Rudy can do that. But the thing is he is a big
time passer. He makes players better by his passing ability and is able to find
players. He'll really be able to step-up and help everyone early on.
KP: 第一，他可以幫Roy分擔在進攻方面的壓力，但我相信全隊上的人都可以這樣做。有時

Knowing their history together, does having Rudy in Portland give Sergio
(Rodriguez) a peace of mind? It looks like there was some hesitancy in his game
last season.

I certainly hope so. We like to think they'll be able to help each other out
and be a support system for each other. But I think we have a good team in
terms of character. We expect that from everybody, just not Sergio and Rudy,
but everybody.

Even still, it has to be nice to finally have Rudy in town. It's been a long
process.

You know, it has. I think what we really like - and what is really rewarding is
- that he came, and it was a big-time team effort by our marketing department,
by Chad Buchanen, by Mike Born, by Tom Penn and Nate McMillan. We had to
recruit the kid and we are very glad right now that we have him.

Let's move on to Shaun Livingston. Can you talk about your decision to pass on
Shaun?

I don't want to get too much into that. What I will say is this: we feel good
about the guys that we have right now. Because of that, we wanted to focus on
something that we have.

I take it, it was not an easy decision for you?

I've had the chance to get a glimpse of Martell (Webster) during some of his
workouts the past few weeks, and he's really working his tail off. What can we
expect from him this season?

He's in unbelievable shape. You know with Martell, you always have to keep in
mind how young he is. He's going on his fourth year, but he's still real young
and so some times it's easy for us to go, "well, he's a veteran and has years
in this league," but I like how he approached this summer. He sort of attacked
it. I think he's in game-time shape right now. And he's looking at this as very
serious business right now. I don't mean that in a negative way.
KP: 他現在體型相當的好，你知道當提到Webster，總是會想說他很年輕。今年是他第四年

Ike Diogu may have been the back-page story in the Jerryd Bayless deal on draft
night, but now with Channing Frye on the shelf, Diogu looks to be in the right
place at the right time.

you can't rely solely on your perimeter players. And that's what I like about
Ike. He can score in the post, but again we're going to look to him to step up,
especially the first part of the year because we took a step back with a couple
players injury wise.

see him every day. But I do know in the draft we had him very high. We like him
as a person. He has to come in here, be hungry and earn some minutes.

Kevin, we look at this team on paper - the starting line-up, the second unit -
and the first thing that jumps out at me is, these guys are going to run. Yet,
looking at the numbers last year, Portland struggled on the break. Will that
change this season?
H: KP，我們來看一下球隊的陣容，先發和替補，第一個讓我想到的是這些球員即將爆發。

Now, you are getting into coaching. And Nate (McMillan) and I have talked about
this, but he feels like we can get out and run but I don't want to answer for
him.

Fair enough. But you've coached in Portland before. Back in 2005 when you
filled-in as interim head coach, did you ever imagine it would get to this
point? The pieces seem to be falling into place.

They really are. We've worked really hard to get what we've got. We've made
some incremental moves over the last few seasons. But I know this: we're not
going to rest on our laurels. We're not going to be satisfied with anything
less than improvement.

And what we tell everybody around here - and it's kind of our motto - we want

things. But we have confidence in this team....

While Portland has the talent to compete for a playoff spot out West, nothing
is going to be easy this season. The Conference remains stacked. But still, no
one will blame the Blazers this season for being boring or noncompetitive.
即使拓荒者擁有在西區搶奪季後賽門票的天份，沒有事情會變輕鬆。球賽還是一卡車在前面
等著。但是，沒有人會怪罪拓荒者這一季的比賽是無聊或是沒競爭力的。
Count on that.
