With four starters out of action, Sunday’s 93-80 preseason loss to Utah at
the Rose Garden amounted to an audition for many of the Trail Blazer players
vying for playing time or roster spots.

Nobody passed the test in more impressive fashion than Nicolas Batum, the
versatile rookie out of France.

The 6-8, 200-pound Batum came off the bench to make 7 of 11 shots from the
field, score a game-high 16 points and improve his chances to serve an
important role for Portland during the early regular season.

Batum – acquired in a draft-day deal with Houston – had three rebounds, two

Veteran center Joel Przybilla said Batum has made “huge strides” since
arriving in Portland last month to play pickup games with teammates at the

Ironically, Batum was assigned to guard Utah’s Kirilenko for much of Sunday’
s exhibition. Kirilenko was good, too, coming off the bench to hit 7 of 10
from the field en route to a team-high 15 points in 25 minutes.

Portland acquired Batum’s rights from Houston. The Blazers had the Rockets
choose Batum at No. 25, then sent a pair of later picks – which turned out
to be Darrell Arthur and Joey Dorsey – to Houston.

The Blazers gave Batum an extended look at the Las Vegas Summer League, but
the Frenchman averaged only 6.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 27.2 minutes and
shot poorly.

“I was very bad in summer league,” Batum said.

With starting small forward Martell Webster out another 7-9 weeks following
surgery for a stress fracture of a leg, McMillan may look at Batum to fill a
starting role.

"Once he is hitting his shot consistently, I think he would be a forward you

In the four preseason games, Batum has made 14 of 26 shots (.538) while

side.

The Blazers, going without four starters, were outrebounded 47-28. Utah
turned 21 Portland turnovers into 24 points. Utah committed 23 turnovers,
resulting in 15 Blazer points.

“That many turnovers will kill you just about every time,” McMillan said. “

Portland led 38-35 at halftime, but Utah outscored the Blazers 34-21 in the
third quarter to seize control of the game.

Missing from Portland’s lineup were Webster and point guard Steve Blake, who
has missed all of the preseason with a hamstring injury. McMillan held

starting five was playing. they controlled the boards. We have to correct

The only Portland regular to start Sunday was center Greg Oden. The 7-foot
rookie was mostly a non-factor, making only 1 of 5 shots from the field –
 scoring on a dunk – while grabbing six rebounds and scoring six points with
one block in 21 minutes.

唯一在禮拜天有正常上場的是中鋒Oden，這位7呎的新秀幾乎沒得到什麼分，投5中1，僅

“I’m still trying to get into shape,” said Oden, who missed all of last
season following microfracture knee surgery in September 2007. “That’s the
big thing. Everything else is fine.

Oden said he is trying to focus on defense.

over and get five blocks a game.”

Oden, 20, had a hard time getting the ball. When he got it in the post area,
he couldn’t find the range on short jump hooks through mass defensive
pressure.

“I definitely have to get a whole lot better to be able to play through
double- and triple-teams,” Oden said. “I have to get better post position,

Utah coach Jerry Sloan liked his first look at Oden as a pro.

“He’s a great athlete,” the veteran Jazz coach said. “He’s way ahead of
where you’d think he’d be for a kid that age. He has a tremendous knowledge
for the game, it looks like.”

The Blazers beat Utah in three of the teams’ four meetings last season, “
and they should be better this year,” Sloan said. The Blazers “beat us to
death last year. They have a chance to be a terrific team.”

Last Wednesday, Golden State’s Ronny Turiaf – a Los Angeles Laker last
season – spent time guarding Oden. Asked to compare Oden and the Lakers’
 Andrew Bynum, Turiaf said, “Andrew is smoother. Oden does a great job
getting his body real low, trying to put himself in position where he can
explode and go off contact for a nasty dunk with both hands. They’re both
very strong young players; both should have real good careers in the NBA.
Greg will be one of the great presence down low. He’ll get a lot of
defensive attention.”

Turiaf, a native of France, said he played against the Blazers’ Rudy
Fernandez a couple of times in Europe, “and I have seen him play a lot,”
 Turiaf said. “He’s a pretty good player. Pretty explosive, he can shoot
the 3 and he’s a highlight reel. He always looks for a nice little pass. He’
s going to have some nice success in this league.”

Travis Outlaw, who was 6 for 29 shooting in Portland’s first four preseason
games, was 6 for 9 against the Jazz, scoring 14 points in 21 minutes.

Shav Randolph, getting his first start as a Blazer, was 2 for 7 and finished
with eight points and five rebounds in 26 minutes. The free-agent power
forward was 10 for 10 in the first four games, including 9 for 9 in Friday’s
win over Atlanta.

Ex-Duck Luke Jackson, also drawing his first start, made only 2 of 8 shots.
He totaled six points, seven rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes.

Sergio Rodriguez collected nine points, eight assists, five rebounds and
five steals in 35 minutes, but was 0 for 4 from the foul line and had four
turnovers.

McMillan expects Fernandez, Blake and Frye to be available for practice this
week – perhaps as early as Tuesday – and said Fernandez should be able to
play in the next exhibition at Sacramento on Oct. 20.

McMillan said his only concern with Fernandez is his reckless-abandon
playing style, leaving him susceptible to injury. “He’s so fearless going
to the basket, he will take hits,” McMillan said of the rookie guard from
Spain. “He’s not a big guy – he has a Michael Cooper type of frame. His
game is going to the basket. He leaves his feet a lot. But you can’t take
that away from him. He’ll get to the foul line, and when he gets into the
paint, he’ll find open shooters.”

McMillan said the Blazers won’t make any cuts until after the final
preseason game Oct. 23 at Utah. Randolph might be the leader among the free
agents competing for the final spot. “He has a good feel for the game at
both ends of the floor,” McMillan said. “He takes care of the dirty work,
the little things that are huge.”
