Quick: Van Gundy deserves some credit

No player took the Trail Blazers' stunning 109-108 loss to Orlando on Tuesday
night harder than Travis Outlaw.
"I'll probably dwell on it for a minute," Outlaw said long after the game, he
and LaMarcus Aldridge the only ones left in the Blazers locker room at the
Rose Garden. "Kinda feel like it's my fault."
His feeling of fault wasn't that he was the defender on Hedo Turkoglu's
game-winning three-pointer with 0.3 seconds left. And it wasn't his wayward
three-point attempt with 1:41 left and eight seconds remaining on the shot
clock.
No, inside the Blazers locker room, the play of the game -- or non-play of
the game -- came on the Blazers' final offensive possession, when Brandon Roy
was trapped, had no outlet and was forced to hoist a fadeaway three-point
attempt. The shot was an airball, and even though Aldridge rebounded and put
it back, the 24-second shot clock had expired.
Roy should have never had to attempt the desperation three-pointer. Outlaw,
who was standing in the corner behind the three-point line, was supposed to
cut into the middle of the lane, but instead, he stood his ground.
While talking to reporters after the game, coach Nate McMillan couldn't get
over the play, citing it several times, although never saying which player
didn't execute the plan. But later, in a deserted locker room, Outlaw owned
up.
"I messed up on my assignment," Outlaw said. "If I would have cut to the
middle, who knows what would have happened."
After the game, McMillan let Outlaw have it in the Blazers locker room.
"He fussed at me," Outlaw said. "But I've been getting fussed at all my
life."
To McMillan, Outlaw gave no excuses.
"Sometimes, it's good to just take it," Outlaw said.
It's the type of attitude the Blazers need after this heartbreaking loss.
Sometimes, you just have to take it and tip your hat. The Blazers have had
their share of buzzer-beating, how-in-the-world-did-that-happen stuff. Just
ask Houston and Toronto this season.
But even though Outlaw figured he would get over this game, he was frustrated
at his hesitancy. Last season, he came to be known as "Mr. Fourth Quarter"
around these parts for his willingness to take big shots, and his ability to
deliver.
"From my history in the fourth quarter, I should have came to the ball,"
Outlaw said. "Remember the Memphis game last year when I hit the last shot? I
had to come to get the ball. This was the same situation."
Quick interlude here: Yes, Outlaw messed up. But some credit should be given
to Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy. Roy used words like "confused" in describing
the Blazers' late-game play. Outlaw, meanwhile, was hesitant. That's because
Van Gundy, late in the game, mixed up his defense, using different players to
trap Roy.
On the fateful shot-clock violation play, Outlaw was being guarded by Rashard
Lewis. In the first half, Lewis was the player trapping Roy. But on the last
play, Turkoglu trapped Roy, confusing Outlaw.
"When I saw my guy not doubling, I stayed in the corner and tried to space
(the court)," Outlaw said. "I should have gone to the ball."
But since it wasn't Outlaw's man who doubled Roy (Rudy Fernandez was guarding
Turkoglu), Outlaw didn't think it was his responsibility.
"You gotta know what to do," Outlaw said.
The Blazers still had a chance to hang on, but with Outlaw on him, Turkoglu
banked in a three-pointer from the top of the arc.
"I was on him; I didn't see how he hit it," Outlaw said with a disgusted
laugh. "My biggest thing was I was trying not to foul him taking a three."
There was no foul. Just a date with an irate McMillan in the locker room.
While his teammates said they would get over the loss, Outlaw said it would
be tough for him.
"It's not as easy to get over when you feel like it's your fault," Outlaw
said.
