The questions about how Darius Miles' time in Memphis could derail Portland's
salary-cap dreams can return to the back burner for now: The Grizzlies waived
Miles Tuesday night after using him in two games.

Here is the news from the Memphis Commercial Appeal:

The 6-9 forward was told of the team's decision before the players and
coaches boarded a plane for New Jersey, where the Griz play tonight.

A decision whether to guarantee Miles' contract for the rest of the season
had to be reached by 5 p.m. today.

Griz general manager Chris Wallace said cutting Miles, who signed a
nonguaranteed deal on Dec. 12, had more to do with the injury to center Darko
Milicic than Miles' ability.

"It's tough to guarantee somebody right now and use up flexibility," Wallace
said.

"We'll take a breather and see how long this thing takes with Darko. There's
no other signing imminent but we'll take a look at the field a little bit. If
something needs to be addressed, we can."

"I don't think you've seen the last of him in the NBA," Wallace said. "He
showed he can come back and play in this league."

This means that, for now, the $9 million in salary Miles was scheduled to be
paid by the Blazers for the final two years of his contract (this season and
next year), before he was waived last spring under a special medial
clearance, will remain off the books. But Miles can sign with another team,
and if he plays in eight more games this season, his $9 million salary for
next year will go back on the Blazers' books and constrict their cap room
this summer.
