After Trail Blazers starting point guard Steve Blake went down with a
separated right shoulder, coach Nate McMillan gathered Sergio Rodriguez
and Jerryd Bayless for a meeting at which he presented his young backups
with a simple message:
This is your chance.
"I didn't want them in a competition with each other and I told them they
needed to support each other," McMillan said. "But because I knew Blake
could be out for a while, I told them that this was an opportunity for
both of them to show what they could do."
Roughly three weeks, 12○games and a slew of ups and downs later,
statistics and playing time suggest that Bayless has capitalized on
the opportunity. The rookie out of the University of Arizona has played
more minutes than Rodriguez in eight of the 12 games since Blake was
injured, including six of the past seven.
And during the six games before Sunday afternoon's 109-108 victory over
the New York Knicks, Bayless was averaging more points (9.3 per game),
shooting better from the field (48.7 percent) and had committed fewer
turnovers (nine) than Rodriguez (5.8○points per game, 41.9 percent, 12
turnovers). Bayless, who possesses more of a scoring mentality, even had
a slight edge in assists (24 to 22).
"I think this is a taste (of what I can do), but I can do more," Bayless
said. "You have to understand, I'm playing a role on this team. Right now,
I'm just trying to get to the hoop and get other people involved. We already
have superstars in Brandon (Roy), LaMarcus (Aldridge) and Greg (Oden). I'm
just trying to be a role player and help this team out whenever I can. It's
a process, but I think I'm doing pretty well at it."
Outside of the impending trading deadline and raging debate on whether
the Blazers should shake up their roster with a deal, perhaps no subject
is driving Internet message board chatter more than whether McMillan
should release the reins on Bayless and move him ahead of Rodriguez in
the rotation.
But through it all, McMillan has steadfastly started Rodriguez in Blake's
absence and even has suggested that Rodriguez will retain his backup role
when Blake returns. On the surface, the decision is perplexing; fans see
Bayless' fearless, aggressive style, watch him take over important
stretches of games, and long for more.
But behind the scenes, McMillan sees a young player who is still learning
the nuances of the Blazers' system, has yet to fully grasp the team's
half-court sets and is trying to absorb the NBA game. And even on defense,
where Bayless is clearly superior to Rodriguez in on-ball matchups, the
rookie is struggling to grasp the Blazers' schemes and rotations.
"Things out there are so fast and are moving so fast for him," said
McMillan, who noted that former MVP point guard Steve Nash took three
years to develop. "It's going to take some time. He'll get better, but
it won't happen overnight. It's going to take a few years."
Of course, Bayless is doing his best to accelerate this development.
McMillan, with his stoic demeanor and unflappable poise, can be an
intimidating figure to young players. His coaching style is more tough
love than effusive praise, especially for rookies, who McMillan says,
"have to earn your way (and) have to work your way to establish yourself
in this league."
But more than most first-year players, Bayless is stretching his comfort
zone and forging a bond with his coach. Almost daily, Bayless randomly
taps McMillan on the shoulder on the team plane, knocks on his hotel room
door on the road or pops into McMillan's office to watch film or talk
about schemes.
Even when Bayless wasn't playing -- he did not play in 20 of the Blazers'
first 31 games -- the inquisitive 20 year-old was a sponge for knowledge
and insight. If he wasn't begging coaches to watch game film, he was
text-messaging McMillan with questions or simply calling for advice.
"He just wants to know, he wants to learn, he wants to learn how to play
(point guard)," McMillan said. "He comes up all the time looking for help.
He's not afraid to ask. He wants information, he wants to know and he
wants to get better, and the way to get better is by asking questions.
It's a lot of communication, talking, hearing him, listening to him and
what he's thinking, and trying to get a feel for who he is.
"He's a very competitive kid, who's fearless, who's not afraid. But he's
just ... he's raw, he's very raw."
This raw ability is becoming more and more refined every day. Bayless'
greatest asset is an aggressive style, which fuels his forceful drives
to the basket and in-your-face defense. And when given the opportunity,
he has shown a natural ability to take over games, including the
contributions he made during wins over New Orleans (11 fourth-quarter
points during a comeback victory) and New Jersey (a career-high 23 points)
during Blake's absence.
But there have been some rookie moments sprinkled between Bayless' recent
stretch of positive play -- he had four turnovers in a loss at Dallas,
and he hit the side of the backboard as often as the rim in a 4 of 12
shooting effort in back-to-back games against Charlotte and Utah. His
erratic, three-turnover performance against the Knicks prompted McMillan
to sit him the entire fourth quarter.
Plus, as Rodriguez demonstrated Sunday, when he finished with 16○points
and six assists in one of his best performances of the season, experience
and a firmer grasp of the offense can go a long way.
Blake is scheduled to undergo further examination on his injured shoulder
Wednesday and is doubtful for the Blazers' game against Oklahoma City that
evening. It seems likely that the veteran point guard will not play again
before the All-Star break.
So, at least for a couple of more games, Bayless will continue to learn
on the fly and expand his game. And there's little doubt there will be
plenty of film sessions and one-on-one chats with McMillan in the interim.
"When Steve comes back, I don't know how much I'm going to be playing,"
Bayless said. "But I'm going to keep learning and keep getting better.
I'm still young in this league. I'm just trying to improve, find things
I can do better and find ways to mature."
Bayless
