You know what they say ... biggest stars, biggest mouths

Back in 2006, when Brandon Roy was a rookie, I remember checking into a Los
Angeles hotel while traveling for the Trail Blazers' final exhibition game.
In the lobby, I ran into Dick Bavetta, one of the NBA's veteran referees.

回到2006年，當Roy是個新人時，我記得在洛杉磯一家旅館的大廳，我走向Dick Bavetta，

We struck up a conversation, and unprompted, he started to rave about Roy.
Bavetta said he was impressed with Roy's game. But he was even more impressed
with how he carried himself, particularly in respect to the officials.

我們開始聊起天，很自然地，他開始談起了Roy。
Bavetta說他對Roy的比賽印象深刻，但令他更印象深刻的是Roy對他自身的掌握
尤其是面對裁判這個部份。



"He never says a peep," Bavetta said.

Later, I relayed that story to Roy, and told him that attitude would benefit
him in the long run.

之後，我把這個故事述說給Roy，而且告訴他這樣的態度長期來說會他有所裨益

Fast forward to today. If you've been paying attention to the Blazers lately,
you might have noticed a change in Roy.

回到今日，若你有關注近期的拓荒者，你可能發現Roy的一項改變。



It has nothing to do with his shot. Or his defense. Or his ball handling.

跟他的投籃，防守，對球的掌控都沒有關係。

It has to do with his interaction with the referees. More than at any time in
his career, Roy is complaining. Throwing his hands in the air. Shaking his
head.

是他與裁判的互動有了點與以前的不同。他開始會抱怨、會沒有針對對象地甩手、搖頭。


I brought it up to Roy before Friday's game against Atlanta. Roy didn't argue
that he has become more demonstrative with the referees, but he had an
interesting reason why.

我在星期五與亞特蘭大的比賽開打前，向Roy提起了這件事情。Roy並未去爭論他是在向
裁判宣示些什麼，但是他有個有趣的理由。

He is complaining not so much for himself, but for the team.

他抱怨的部份並非他自身，而是關於球隊。

"For me, it gets to this time of the season and we still get treated like the
youngest team in the league," Roy said. "And we never get those
benefit-of-the-doubt calls that some of the best teams get. At times it's
just frustrating. It doesn't seem fair."

Roy說"對我而言，到了如此時候，我們拓荒者隊仍然被當作全聯盟最年輕的隊伍來對待，
而我們從未在一些吹判模稜兩可時成為受益方，就是那些最好的隊伍所受的待遇。
有時，這真讓人沮喪，這看起來不公平。"

The Blazers, as we all know, are a bunch of nice guys. Roy thinks that
reputation has some carry over to where the referees think the Blazers are
pushovers, incapable of playing tough.

拓荒者，就如同我們知道的，有一大堆很好的人。Roy認為拓荒者在裁判的眼中，是
容易擊敗的隊伍，我們無法打的更強悍。


"People kind of joke around and call us choir boys," Roy said. "But I think
sometimes officials look at us as choir boys. So I think we just have to be a
little bit more aggressive. I just think our nature ... people say teams
think we are soft, so why wouldn't officials think it?"

Roy說"人們有點用少年歌手這類的詞來開我們玩笑，但裁判有時是真的這麼想，所以
我覺得我們必須打的更有侵略性。我們的天性...(大概是想說大家都很溫和).....
所以人們覺得我們軟，別隊覺得我們軟，裁判難道不會這麼想嗎?"

For decades, the NBA has been about star treatment, especially with referees.
It seems if teams merely look the wrong way at Miami's Dwyane Wade a foul is
called. A toss-up call between Kobe Bryant and Travis Outlaw? You better
believe the call is going Bryant's way.

好幾十年來， NBA有所謂的球星待遇，尤其是裁判給的待遇。當Wade看起來不太妙時，
一個哨聲可能就出現了。當Kobe與Travis Outlaw之間發生了吹判，我相信你會覺得
哨聲是站在Kobe那邊的。

"That has been the league for years," said Blazers coach Nate McMillan, who
has either coached or played in the NBA for the past 21 years.

"這在聯盟已經行之多年了"不論是以球員還是教練身份，在NBA已有21年經驗的拓荒者

But Roy thinks it is extending beyond star treatment. He thinks teams as a
whole get the benefit of the doubt. And the Blazers are not one of those
teams, despite sitting in the upper echelon of the Western Conference with a
34-20 record after Friday's 108-98 victory over the Hawks.

但是Roy認為這是超越球星待遇的問題。他認為這是球隊待遇的問題。

"I think the most experienced team gets the most calls. It goes, like, the
Lakers, Boston, the Spurs, Cleveland ... ," Roy said. "But I'm like, when
does our time come, you know?"

So he says he is sticking up for the team when he slaps his wrist to show he
got fouled while shooting. When he pleads his case with his arms outstretched
he says he is trying to show the Blazers have spine, and aren't pushovers.

所以Roy說他現在要為了球隊，他要用些肢體語言向裁判做些表示，告訴他們他被犯規了



"I just think we need to start letting people know this means as much to us
as it does to the Spurs or any other team in this league," Roy said. "We may
be quiet guys, we may be shy guys, but we want it just as bad as those teams."

I asked Roy on Friday morning if he remembered our conversation about Bavetta
during his rookie season. Before I could finish the question, he knew exactly
what I was talking about.

"You mean when he said I don't complain?" Roy said. "Yeah, I remember that.
But then I look at all the players who get the most calls in the league, and
they are the most arrogant players. The ones who chew the refs out. So I'm
like, 'Wait a minute. I'm not getting any calls and I'm not saying nothing.'

Roy說"你是指他說我都不抱怨的嗎?" "是啊，我記得這件事情。但是當我看到那些在聯盟
中得到最多吹判的球員，他們都是最傲氣的球員，是那些會向裁判喊話的人。

"But I'm watching guys like Chris Paul and those guys, and they eat the refs.
From here to there, all game long. I mean, from the opening tip he's coming
out saying 'Oh! He's touching me! Get him off me!'" Roy says as he flails
backward. "Then, I'm like, 'Oh, he's going to get a call in two plays.' "

"但當我看到像CP3和其他傢伙，他們把裁判吃定了。從這到那，整場比賽，從球賽一開始
他就開始說著'喔! 他碰到我了! 讓他離我遠點' "


To be fair, Roy does get his share of calls. It might not be every game, but
he has been given the benefit of the doubt more times than he has been
wronged. And to be fair, Roy is talking about all this because he was asked,
not because it has been a point of contention. And it should be noted that
Roy never yells at the referees, and seldom swears.

公允一點，Roy確實有得到些吹判，也許不是每場比賽，但是在一些受爭議的吹判中，他
比以前得到更多的好處。Roy正在談論這些是因為他被要求這麼做，不是因為他想要與他
人競爭這些。注意，Roy從不對裁判咆哮，也非常少會有咒罵。

He has three technical fouls in his career. His first came last season for
asking referee Marc Davis if he could hear the Rose Garden crowd. "They are
saying boo," Roy told him. His second was this season for exchanging words
with New Orleans' David West. His third came at Dallas this season when he
waved his hand in disgust toward Bob Delaney.

在生涯到目前為止，Roy得到了三次技術犯規。

"Don't get me wrong -- I don't want my reputation to be that of a whiner,"
Roy said. "But I want to win. People say Chris Paul is a winner when he does
it. Kobe is considered a winner. So I'm going to do whatever I can do to help
us win. It's not to point out an official or a player. I just think we need
to start being a little more aggressive in our ways. Good teams are
aggressive. Physical. And vocal. And maybe this is me realizing I have to
come out of my shell a little more."

Roy說"別誤會我了--我不是要變成個牢騷者，但我我想贏。當CP3這麼做時，人們稱他贏家
Kobe被認為是個贏家。所以我要去做任何我覺得能幫助我們勝利的事情。我指的不是一個
官方或是一個球員，而是我認為我們需要用我們的方式打的更具侵略性一點。好的球隊
是有侵略性的，不管是肢體碰觸上，還是言語上。這可能就是讓我體會到我需要更加理直
氣壯一點點。"
