The Trail Blazers overcame a 14-deficit to defeat the Indiana Pacers 107-105
Wednesday night at the Rose Garden and setup a battle for first place in the
Northwest Division on Thursday. Here's a transcript of coach Nate McMillan's
postgame news conference:

How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105. We played defense
down the stretch.

"I just want to say something about the kid, Nathan (Vredevelt), who was in
the accident. I realize this; there are more things that are so much more
important in life and I went to see his family today and visit Nathan and I

$13,000 to his medical care. So not only are they great in the second half --
(and) we've needed them all season long -- but they reached into their
pockets to help the family out. So our hats off and thank you to our fans."

"Your question ... the Pacers are unpredictable and it's a tough team for a
young team to play against because (they're) so frantic and they don't really
run any sets. They probe and they're good at it. And we've had trouble
against speed and when you have speed out there and the ability to create and
shoot, you have to be on your toes every possession. Every possession is
important because they can go from being up one, two, three points, to you
being down 10 to 12 points. And we tightened up the fourth quarter. We made
some buckets the fourth quarter, to sneak this game out."

quarters, we were stagnant. We were back to one pass and a shot or ... just
going off on our own; a lot of settling for jump shots and not getting to the
rim. The pick and roll, they're pretty good at that, so we just 1-4-flat and
allowed him to create and we were able to get into that penalty early, which
I think helped us."

Talk about your defense at the start of the fourth quarter. That seemed to be
a difference tonight.

"Again, the speed ... of that team in the first quarter, and really that
first half, I don't think we anticipated how fast they were. And all of a
sudden we're back on our heels and down in that game and we had to adjust to
it and believe that we could guard those guys. The third quarter, we knew
they've been getting off to a good start, but we needed to be physical with
them. Even though they are small, they play physical basketball on the
defensive end of the floor. We needed to do that on the defensive end of the
floor and I thought we did that starting that fourth quarter."

Why did Marquis Daniels give you guys so much trouble?

"Again, they just run the pick and roll ... we got hit on screens, he got the
basket, he made some shots. They're playing three points guards. You take the
first available shot that you can get and everyone has their opportunities,
with (T.J.) Ford, (Jarrett) Jack and Daniels' night was tonight."

What were your emotions when Steve Blake lost the ball at half court late in
the fourth quarter?

"The one thing I told them is there's time on the clock. In a situation like

ball into Rudy (Fernandez). Now we spread the floor and we didn't necessarily
need to get the ball into Brandon but they denied; what they were doing is
they tried to deny the ball in to Rudy. It's just now when you get it in, you
have to execute."

What did you think about the foul call on Brandon at the end?

"I thought that was the appropriate call. He was tripped."

Now you can turn your attention to the Denver Nuggets. How big is that game
tomorrow?

When you get down the end of the game, do you even ponder doing something
other than giving the ball to Brandon?

"Not really. (laughs) You give it to your best player. What would you do that
for? You give it to your best players. It depends on what the defense does.
Sometimes they'll take the ball out of Brandon's hand. You want to put a team
out there, where if they do that, you're prepared for that. So that is why we
go with Travis (Outlaw), Rudy, LaMarcus (Aldridge). We have offensive players
in the game (so) if they do take it out of Brandon's hand, you go to somebody
else. But no; I think in that situation, the game is on the line, it's the
last possession, you want your best creator to have the ball."
