Blazers looking for some grit, inside and out

TUALATIN -- With a season-ending defeat against Houston fresh in his mind and
his thoughts slowly drifting toward the future, All-Star guard Brandon Roy
revealed one crucial area he thinks the Trail Blazers will need to tweak if
they are to grow into a championship contender.

"We are going to need some toughness," Roy said. "We are going to have to get

Roy made the statement after his exit interviews with coaches and team
management the day after the Blazers were eliminated in their first-round
playoff series with the Rockets. But a little more than a month later, as the
Blazers evaluate draft prospects, Roy's words resonate.

No matter what the Blazers do this offseason -- make a splashy trade for a
veteran, sign a difference-making free agent or add draft picks -- the team
needs to become tougher to advance beyond the first round of the playoffs and
become a championship threat. Outside of playoff experience, perhaps no trait
played a bigger role than toughness in the Rockets' win over the Blazers in the
playoffs.

"I totally agree," Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said of Roy's
comments. "There's no question we have to get tougher. We found out the
playoffs are a freakin' battle. You have to be able to withstand seven games
and go at guys that are physical and tough and be able to go toe to toe with
them."

The Blazers made strides at shedding their "too nice" reputation this season,
when they showed glimpses of developing into a rugged group.

The best example came in a December victory over the Boston Celtics in which
Blazers center Greg Oden was whistled for a technical foul for shoving Celtics
guard Ray Allen into the first row during a drive to the basket, and Blazers
forward LaMarcus Aldridge got into a physical confrontation with Celtics
forward Kevin Garnett. The gritty Blazers defeated the Celtics even though Roy
didn't play because of an injury.

committing a hard foul on Rudy Fernandez, also stand out. But such examples
were few and far between. So Pritchard and his staff have work to do.

But the issue of how the Blazers will add toughness -- and what, exactly,
toughness is -- is up for debate. It would seem the easiest solution is through
free agency or a trade. But Pritchard said "there are a couple tough players in
this draft," and he refuses to limit his options.

Either way, the toughness the Blazers are seeking might not fit into the
traditional definition. A bruising backup power forward or a scrappy defender
would be ideal, but the Blazers aren't merely looking for a physical presence.

"Obviously we need toughness, but we need a tough guy with a high IQ," Blazers
assistant coach Monty Williams said. "It's more than the cultural toughness
everyone talks about. My idea of toughness is Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan (of
the Spurs). They bring it every play. They don't give up. They play hurt. They
have the character to do what's right in the locker room. To me that's
toughness.

Blazers coach Nate McMillan agreed. When asked to identify some of the NBA's
toughest players, his answers were unexpected. The first name mentioned? Steve
Nash of the Phoenix Suns. The second? Duncan. Others included Derek Fisher of
the Lakers and the Celtics' Allen.

"It's the mental part of it," McMillan said. "You're not going to be a bully,

toughness is being able to play in the moment. And being able to raise and play
up to the level of that particular moment.

82-game schedule and be like, look, we got another 30."

McMillan's primary goal is to help foster toughness with the roster he has,
rather than bank on Pritchard acquiring a player to fill the void. But it's
clear the Blazers are searching for some grit.
相較於依賴KP幫忙補強空缺的球員，McMillan的主要目標是幫忙他的球員培養出堅決，但是
很明白的，拓荒者還在尋找些膽識。
"We're going to look at it; we're definitely going to look at it," McMillan
said. "We're going to look at all our positions and look at these free agents
and look at the draft and try to plug in some needs for us next season. And
certainly the physical part of the game (is part of it).

Nate說。
