The mystery around the NBA is where Trail Blazers general manager Kevin
Pritchard will turn after being spurned by free agent Hedo Turkoglu on
Friday.

Early indications are he has talked to representatives regarding free agents
Andre Miller and David Lee, while also calling Charlotte to rekindle trade
talks that stalled in February regarding Bobcats small forward Gerald
Wallace.

Still, those talks appear to have led to dead ends, and certainly nothing
serious, leaving nobody with a feel for Pritchard's master plan.

"I'm good at a lot of things, but prying into the mind of Kevin Pritchard is
not one of them," said agent Andy Miller, who represents key free agents

The biggest insight into Pritchard's mindset came Monday, when a team source
revealed that the Blazers are most likely to pull away from the free agent
market and use their cap space to execute an financially uneven trade.

Teams under the league salary cap - and the Blazers expect to be $7 million
to $8 million under when the cap is announced today or Wednesday - are not
required to match salaries of the players involved. For instance, the Blazers
can acquire a player making $10 million by using their $7 million cap space
and sending a player making $3 million to the other team.

Many think the Blazers are in the market for a starting point guard, a
dynamic small forward or a backup power forward. Turkoglu was a dynamic,
multi-faceted small forward who was close to signing with the Blazers before
electing to agree with Toronto.

Since the stunning reversal Friday evening, the Blazers have been active,
according to agents around the league. Andy Miller said the Blazers first
inquired about Andre Miller shortly after the free agent market opened July
1, but then the dialogue ceased. After the Turkoglu deal fell through, his
phone line lit up again.

"I talked to him more this weekend than I have since the start," Miller said
of Pritchard. "I talked to him Saturday and Sunday, but not (Monday)."
Mark Bartelstein, who represents Lee, said Pritchard took the same approach
with him - talking briefly with him on July 1, then more frequent calls after
the Turkoglu deal flopped. Bartelstein said the Blazers are interested in
Lee, a 6-foot-9 power forward/center, even though he plays positions where
the Blazers appear well-stocked, with LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden and Joel
Przybilla.

"I don't think they operate like everyone else, where they have to fit
everyone into a hole," Bartelstein said of the Blazers. "They work to acquire
great, young players and they make it work. And that's what I think they are
doing, trying to get the best players they can. And if (Pritchard) has an
over-abundance of bigs? That's a good position to be in in the NBA."

A Blazers source shot down the team's interest in Lee, saying they like him
as a player, but don't want to pay him what he wants. And a source in
Charlotte said the Bobcats are staunchly against trading Wallace, whom they
view as a building block for the team's future.

That left Andre Miller as the only known scenario that still had legs.
Miller, a 33-year-old point guard who played in Philadelphia last season, is
viewed as an old-school point guard, one who passes before he shoots and
excels at running the offense.

Miller averaged 16.3 points, 6.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds last season,
shooting 47.3 percent from the field, but only 28.3 percent from three-point
range.
Early in the free agent period there were rumors of a sign-and-trade with
Philadelphia that would have sent Miller to the Blazers for Steve Blake and
Travis Outlaw, but Andy Miller said his discussions this weekend did not
include sign-and-trade scenarios.

It is unclear where the Blazers stand on Miller, but his agent left no
question how he feels about Miller playing in Portland.

"It's a good fit, and I think Andre Miller puts them over the top," Andy
Miller said. "They desperately need a starting point guard to take the
pressure off Brandon Roy. Andre would be able to control the floor and give
that team better direction in the open court. It's their team, and they've
made great progress, but at some point, you have to make a leap forward."
