A representative for Paul Millsap said Portland could be in for a surprise
if, or when, the power forward comes to the Trail Blazers.
"Paul Millsap has got more game than anyone knows,'' said agent Ara
Vartanian, who represents Millsap. "People just haven't seen it because he
played in a structured offense (in Utah). But he can shoot, and I'm talking
(range from) NBA three.''
Millsap on Friday signed an offer sheet from the Blazers. Utah has seven days
to match the offer, which is a four-year deal worth $32 million. The deal
calls for Millsap to receive $10.3 million within seven days of the contract
being signed.
Millsap, 24, is regarded as physical and active player who excels at
rebounding. He averaged 13.5 points and 8.6 rebounds last season when he
spent much of the season backing up Carlos Boozer. However, he started 38
games when Boozer was injured and recorded 19 consecutive double-doubles
while also averaging 16.0 points and 10.3 rebounds.
However, Vartanian says Millsap is more than just a blue-collar bruiser
inside. He says he can play three positions - small forward, power forward
and center - and has an outside shot that was rarely, if ever seen in Utah
because coach Jerry Sloan wanted him to anchor the paint.
Vartanian insists that Millsap will be whatever Blazers coach Nate McMillan
wants him to be. He said Millsap and McMillan have already engaged in lengthy
conversations about his role. The two have exchanged cell phone numbers and
will become more closely acquainted next week when Millsap takes part in Team
USA practices in Las Vegas.
"They discussed at length at how to use Paul,'' Vartanian said. "I think they
already have a good relationship.''
Millsap plays the same position as a rising star on the Blazers, LaMarcus
Aldridge, and has assured the team that he is on board with coming off the
bench. Last season, he averaged 30.1 minutes a game.
"Let's be honest - injuries are part of the game, and Paul can play three
positions,'' Vartanian said. "And I know there are people who want to say
this is all about the money, but it isn't. Paul wants to win. And he thinks
he is a great fit there. I think he is the missing piece for them. He could
have really helped in that (playoff) series against Houston.''
