Jerryd Bayless spent the bulk of his rookie season with the Trail Blazers
stressing about playing time, fretting about his role and focused on proving
that he belonged in a league that features the best basketball players in the
world.

But a funny thing happened in the months that followed his up-and-down
introduction to the NBA. The fiery and determined player, who is best known
for his aggressive game and intense ambition, altered his mindset and shifted
his focus in preparation for his second professional season.
"I just want to live life abundantly," Bayless said, grinning from ear to
ear. "That is my main focus. If I play, I'm going to play and play hard.
Whatever else happens, happens. I can't control it. So, I don't know. I'm
just living life abundantly."

Patience is not something that comes naturally for Bayless, but this mental
transformation -- combined with a greater understanding and comfort level
with the NBA game -- seems to be working. He has been one of the bright spots
of training camp and has "caught everyone's attention," according to coach
Nate McMillan.
Before the Blazers' victory over the Denver Nuggets Sunday night, McMillan
credited Bayless' "fire" and "scrappy play," singling him out as an example
for a team that seemed to be going through the motions.

It was an awkward offseason for Bayless. He played in summer league for the
second time with a goal of showing he could run a team as a "pure" point
guard. But one year after earning MVP honors, he had an up-and-down
performance, showing flashes of potential but also showing he had much to
learn. Shortly thereafter, the Blazers signed free agent point guard Andre
Miller, and Bayless went from saying he hoped to battle Steve Blake for the
starting spot to hoping he would play at all.

Just before the start of training camp, McMillan sat Bayless down in his
office at the practice facility in Tualatin to discuss his role. To no great
surprise, Bayless was informed he would be the fifth guard, behind Blake and
Miller at point guard and Brandon Roy and Rudy Fernandez at shooting guard.
"And he said, 'How do I play?'" McMillan said. "And I said, 'Work. When you
get that opportunity, take advantage of it. 'He's done that. He's come in
every day and gone after guys. It's not personal, he just feels he can play
and he's gonna prove it to the coaching staff and to everyone here. Every day
in practice, he's early and he's working and he's gotten the opportunity in
the last couple games and he's made the most of it."

Bayless says he lost confidence in his jump shot for the first time in his
life last season, in part because he struggled with the randomness of his
playing time (an average of 12.4 minutes in 53 games). And Bayless was so
eager to earn more time that when he got on the floor, he tried to unleash
days and sometimes weeks of pent up fury.
Now, with a new approach, he's more at peace with his place on the team. So
far in training camp, Bayless has been a better, more fluid player who has
deftly straddled the fine line of creating his own scoring chances and
distributing to teammates.

McMillan has mostly played Bayless alongside Blake or Miller or Roy, which
has allowed Bayless to play off the ball and create scoring chances more
freely. Bayless ranks fifth on the team in scoring (8.8 points per game) and
fourth in assists (nine), even though he has played the 10th-most minutes
(89:16) in the exhibition season.
His best performance -- and "one of the best games I've played in a long
time" -- came at Utah last week, when he finished with 13 points and seven
assists in 30 minutes. Bayless says he feels more comfortable running and
reading pick and roll sets on offense, feels more confident in his
decision-making and more at ease with the NBA game.

Roy has noticed a difference in Bayless' pace and tempo on the court -- and
his approach off of it.
"Last year he was kind of big eyed and he was doing everything with his
strength -- muscling around and playing really fast," Roy said, flexing his
arms and gritting his teeth to illustrate Bayless' passionate demeanor. "This
year he's making better reads, he's getting in the paint and if he doesn't
have it, he's backing out and passing it and getting out of there. Where he
got himself into trouble last year, I thought he tried to do too much with
the ball.

Bayless sprained his left ankle in the Blazers' win over the Nuggets and did
not practice Monday. But he said the injury would not keep him out of the
Tuesday night's exhibition game against the Jazz -- not with the way he's
been playing and with the opportunity he's created for himself.
"It was killing me, but I'm going to keep on playing," Bayless said of his
ankle. "I just know if I continue to get more minutes, I can continue to do
more. And I'm showing that. I'm happy not playing. But I've gotten a little
bit of an opportunity and I want to keep going."
