Rip City

The nickname Rip City is usually used in the context of the city's NBA team,
the Portland Trail Blazers. The term was coined by the team's
play-by-play announcer Bill Schonely during a game against the Los Angeles
Lakers on February 18, 1971, the Blazers' first season. In the days prior
to the three-point field goal, Blazers' guard Jim Barnett took an ill-advised
long distance shot that nonetheless went in, giving the new team hope for a
victory against the powerful Lakers. Excited, Schonely exclaimed "Rip City!
All right!" Schonely admits that he has no idea how he came up with the
expression, but it became synonymous with the team and the city of
Portland

簡單翻一下:
Rip City這個詞通常是用在拓荒者有關的文章裡,這個詞的由來是1971年,拓荒者的第一個
球季,在三分線還沒發明的時候,某場對湖人的比賽裡,拓荒者的後衛Jim Barnett投進了
一個超大號的三分,讓拓荒者對打敗強大的湖人有了信心與希望,這時拓荒者的播報員
Schonely就大喊出了Rip City!
他事後說他也不知道為什麼會跑出這個詞來,但這就變成了這個城市的另一個nickname了
