Travis Diener’s 28th birthday is Monday and his present is a contract with
the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Oregonian has learned the Blazers will sign the former Indiana Pacers
guard today to occupy their 15th roster spot once he clears waivers.
Diener was waived by the Pacers on Monday after playing only four games
because of an injured big toe on his left foot. The injury required surgery,
and Diener had come back and played only 24 minutes this season. His last
action was on Feb. 6 at Milwaukee when he played two minutes.

Coming out of Marquette as a second round pick (38th overall) in 2005, Diener
had a reputation as a sharp-shooter, but he has never lived up to that
reputation in five NBA seasons.

For his career, Diener has shot 38.9 percent from the field and 35.4 percent
from three-point range.

The Blazers had an open roster spot when they traded Steve Blake and Travis
Outlaw to the Clippers for Marcus Camby. Monday was the deadline for teams to
sign a player in order to have him on the playoff roster.
The move indicates the Blazers felt they needed shooting and insurance at
point guard, which is being handled by Andre Miller and Jerryd Bayless.
Rookie Patty Mills is on the roster, but has played sparingly in 8 games -
his longest stint coming Saturday in Minnesota when he had 8 points in the
final 4:14 of the game. Diener has played in 174 NBA games.

Diener spent his first two seasons in Orlando and the last three in Indiana.
His best season was 2006-2007 in Indiana when he played in 66 games,
including 21 starts. He averaged 6.9 points and 3.8 assists and shot 37.1
percent from the field and 31.8 percent from three-point range.
The Blazers play Indiana on Wednesday in Portland.
