Brandon Roy made a surprise visit to the Las Vegas Summer League on Saturday
night to watch the Trail Blazers’ defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves 67-60.
The Blazers’ All-Star guard took some time to discuss a host of issues,
including his offseason workouts, the health of his knee, the signing of
Wesley Matthews, the GM and coaching searches, the Blazers’ defense, Rudy
Fernandez and Greg Oden.
Here’s a transcript of the interview:
Q: How’s everything? Word is you’ve been working out at the practice
facility quite a bit?
A: Yeah, things have been going pretty good. For me, I think this summer is
really important. Not just for my game on the court, but just paying
attention to minor details of my body. I actually had a chance to hire a
personal trainer. The Blazers helped me out with that. And (he’s) been
great. We work together every day ... he’s real flexible with his schedule.
So it’s really been good, really been important for me because I want to get
better.
Q: What kind of stuff are you doing with him?
A: We spend about 45 minutes in the weight room. We do a number of things
like balancing and one-leg lunges and squats ... body weight stuff. He shows
me a lot of new stuff, like I feel like (it’s) the first time I’ve stepped
foot in a weight room. I’m like, ‘Are you just trying to do stuff to make
this hard on me?’ We laugh, we joke around, but I think it’s actually been
great for my body. I’ve tried to, not necessarily lose weight, but lean out.
And I think so far that’s been working out for me.
Q: How’s your knee feeling?
A: Great. People still don’t believe me, but when I came back against
Phoenix (in the playoffs), it felt great. I didn’t have the strength to
necessarily run and explode. But I have all that back now. I’m back running
and jumping and I’m dunking again. I’m excited about that. But, again, this
is something that I’m going to pay attention to for the rest of my career;
just always in that weight room. And it doesn’t mean I’m trying to throw
around a lot of weight, but just concentrating on strengthening my quad,
strengthening my calfs. And make sure my hips are loose. Just a number of
things that he’s introduced me to.
Q: Have you been playing any games?
A: I played a couple pick-up games in Seattle. I’ll go back there. But I’m
trying to stay away from that until August. Right now I’m really focusing on
some individual things I want to do out there on the court. I’m trying to
learn to play off the ball a little more. And of course, continue to get
better at my strength, which is playing with the basketball
Q: What did you think about the signing of Wesley Matthews?
A: I think he’s going to help our team. I was a little concerned there with
losing Martell (Webster) and not bringing Travis (Outlaw) back. I was like, ‘
We’re getting thin on that wing. ‘But getting Wes — well, he wants to be
called Wesley — getting Wesley was huge. That was someone I was looking
forward to playing against for the rest of my career. And now he’s my
teammate. So I’m excited about it. He’s kind of in that mold of Nicolas
(Batum). And they just do whatever it takes to help the team win: defend, he
can score, knock down a shot. So there’s a number of things I’m going to
talk to coach (Nate McMillan) about and putting me in different positions, so
that way we can go bigger, put maybe Nicolas and Wesley out there together.
It should be fun.
Q: Like having you play more point guard, with Matthews at the two and Batum
at the three?
A: Yeah, I hope so. Like I said, I’m working a lot off the ball. But my
strength is playing with that basketball and I’m trying to make sure I get
even better at it.
Q: Management likes the defensive potential of Matthews and Batum, talk about
that combination and what that brings to the team?
A: That’s a really, really good combination. Because even when I played
Wesley, when I would score on him I would kind of laugh. He would come back
every time with that competitiveness. So I’m happy to have that on our team.
And not only those two. I think me and LaMarcus (Aldridge) have been talking
about it enough, but we have to continue to get better on the defensive end.
Q: It’s been a turbulent offseason, with Kevin Pritchard’s firing and the
coaching staff shuffle. What’s your opinion of that and what do you think
about the status of the organization right now?
A: I think the biggest thing is, as players, we have to have confidence in
our owner and our president that they are going to do the best thing to make
this team get better. I heard a lot of rumors, but I didn’t get involved
with them. I still have a relationship with KP. I talked with him earlier
today actually. And I saw coach Dean (Demopoulos) and ran and gave him a hug.
Those guys I’m going to miss. But everybody keeps telling me, ‘That’s just
the NBA.’ Guys you came in with, four years later may be gone. And that’s
somewhat what’s happening. But as long as we continue to get better, and I
think that’s what Mr. (Paul) Allen wants and that’s what Larry Miller
wants. We just gotta trust it and I have to continue to worry about myself
and getting these guys ready.
Q: Heard anything about the coaching search and who they’re looking at?
A: Only coach I heard about was (Bernie) Bickerstaff. But I’ve kind of just
been listening to some rumors and I thought we hired people. Then I was
watching that game and they were like, ‘Nate’s still searching.’ I don’t
know. I just got off what these guys say during these games. And so far I
guess we haven’t found anybody. For me, I just hope we get all that stuff
(done as ) soon as possible; we get a general manager in here quickly and get
some coaching, so that way we can somewhat put it behind us. But as long as it
’s kind of an unknown, I think we’ll get asked about it a lot.
Q: What do you think about the roster right now? You have a lot of players at
the same position.
A: I think they’re saying they want to make moves. I’ve heard some rumors
that Rudy (Fernandez) didn’t want to be in Portland. I was a little
disappointed by that. I would love to have another season to play with Rudy.
I think he does help this basketball team. I’m not quick to give him up. But
we’ll see. We definitely need some scoring off the bench. And I think if we
can get, along with Andre (Miller), a point guard that can somewhat get
(Fernandez) off, I think he needs that, I think he’ll be more happy about
staying. But I think until they somewhat show that, he’ll want to continue
to get away.
Q: What’s your impression of the summer league players, specifically Dante
Cunningham, Jeff Pendergraph and Patty Mills?
A: I think they’ve done a good job of it. I think they’re they ones that
made it really easy on (coach) Kaleb (Canales). When you come into a
situation like he did, you need guys who believe in you and who kind of relay
that message to the team. And they’ve done that. They listen to Kaleb
because Jeff and Dante and Patty Mills listen to Kaleb and they believe in
Kaleb. So I think they’ve done a great job of just leading. But not by a lot
of talking. I’ve been around the team since practice (started). They’ve
been leading by example. There were some things Kaleb asked of them during
practice and I was like, ‘I’m not sure I want to do that.’ But they did
it. They didn’t complain and I thought that was great. I think they made it
a lot easier on Kaleb.
Q: Talked to any of your teammates lately?
A: I talked to LaMarcus earlier today. We were joking around. He has a
birthday coming up. Mine is later in the week. I was asking him what he was
doing. He thought about coming up here but he didn’t want to fly and I didn’
t want to fly either, but (my fiance) Tiana (Bardwell) kind of pushed me to
leave. ... She’s here too and she kind of wanted to get out. But I guess we
fly so much during the season, in the offseason, it’s like, ‘No.’ But I’m
glad I came. I got a chance to see these guys and just kind of be around
basketball again is good.
Q: What do you think about LeBron James going to Miami?
A: It was his decision. I think it’s something that I’m not going to get
involved in. There’s enough going on with it. It was his decision. Now we
have to prepare for it.
Q: That’s a tough trio in Miami now. What do you think about that?
A: They’re good. But I think it just makes (it that) hopefully guys don’t
lay down. Guys say, ‘Hey, let’s play even harder against those guys.’ But
sometimes you add too much (and) it can subtract some things. So that’s what
we’re going to have to hope for, that it takes a little bit away from Dwyane
Wade and LeBron James and causes a little bit of confusion and I think that’
ll be most team’s chance. Because they’re good.
Q: The Blazers have clearly made defense an offseason priority. Do you think
this is finally a good defensive team?
A: Yeah I think so. I think some of it is you can want a lot of things, but
last year we were so off balanced, it was really hard for us to step up and
be a great defensive team. We built our defense around Joel (Przybilla) in
the beginning and then started to try to involve big Greg (Oden) in it. Then
when you lose both those guys in the first half of the season, I think we
were off balance a lot. We were playing rookie Jeff Pendergraph, who did a
great job. And Juwan Howard, who did a great job. But I think if we were
healthy last year we would have been a really good defensive team. So the
biggest thing for us, I keep saying, is just trying to stay healthy.
Q: Have you talked to Oden lately? What’s up with him?
A: I’ve talked to him a couple times. He said he’s doing really well. Our
trainer ... I’m always asking him, ‘When are you going to let Greg play?’
But he said in August he can start getting into some more basketball
activities. So we’re looking forward to that. Greg is a big part of what we
want to do.
Q: What about Przybilla?
A: Big Joel. I haven’t talked to Big Joel much. He went back to Minnesota
and he’s kind of hide-out guy. He usually comes about two, three weeks
before training camp starts. Joel you don’t have to worry about. He’s
trying to do everything he can to help this team
