Trail Blazers' coaching staff to be finalized this week, McMillan says
Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan will announce this week additions to
his coaching staff, two of which are believed to be Bernie Bickerstaff and
Bob Ociepka.
McMillan said one or more assistants have been picked, but need to be
finalized this week by team president Larry Miller. One candidate is believed
to be Jim Lynam.
Bickerstaff and Ociepka both coached with Chicago last season under Vinny Del
Negro, who was recently hired by the Los Angeles Clippers. Del Negro was
unable to hire both because they told him they had been hired by Portland.
Bickerstaff was McMillan's first NBA head coach in Seattle. Ociepka has been
an NBA coach for 18 years, with Indiana, the Clippers, Philadelphia,
Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee and Minnesota before spending the past two
seasons in Chicago.
McMillan was told to shuffle his staff this summer. He lost Monty Williams,
who became head coach of the New Orleans Hornets, and Maurice Lucas who is
unable to coach because of health reasons. Also, the contracts of lead
assistant Dean Demopoulos and Joe Prunty were not renewed.
McMillan is in the sixth and final year of his contract.
