  the next level. Marcus Camby is the lone standing center.
  Big year expected for Nicolas Batum.

  BckCourt                                                                A
  Brandon Roy is the heart of the franchise, and he proved it
  during the playoffs. Veteran playmaker Andre Miller should
  feel more comfortable in Year No. 2.

  Defense                                                                 B
  Gave up among fewest points last season, but their deliberate
  offense dictated tempo and kept scores down. Camby is a top
  rebounder and shot blocker.

  Bench                                                                   B+
  Wesley Matthews, Jerryd Bayless, Jeff Pendergraph, Dante
  Cunningham and rookie Luke Babbitt are dripping with potential.
  Could use another veteran presence.

  Coaching                                                                A
  Nate McMillan navigated a minefield of injuries last season,
  delivering 50 wins and a trip to the playoffs. Revamped staff
  this offseason, bringing in former head coach Bernie Bickerstaff
  and ex-Blazers star Buck Williams.


  Overall Grade                                                           B


  Summary

  For all of the positives going on in Portland, several nagging situations
  need to be resolved. Top of the list for new general manager Rich Cho is the
  next move with Rudy Fernandez. His once-promising career has been sidetracked
  by a battle of wills between the organization and the Spanish star.
  Fernandez, unhappy with his role, has talked about sitting out if he's not
  traded.

  The recoveries of Greg Oden and his backup Joel Przybilla loom over the team.
  Oden is supposed to be on schedule, though the former No. 1 overall pick and
  the team are keeping that timetable under wraps. While depth at center is a
  concern, the Blazers did beef up in other areas. Signing away Matthews from
  Utah adds punch to the second team if the former undrafted free agent follows
  up on a surprising rookie campaign.

  Whatever character questions arose from a questionable video appearance by
  Roy should be long forgotten by camp. Roy showed what he was made of and his
  commitment to the franchise by coming back from a knee injury during the
